PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE
Celebrating 150 Years of Champagnat Marist Education in Aotearoa
|
|
|
The Marist tradition is deeply woven into the fabric of my own life. Growing up, the Marist Brothers were very much like extended family to us, and alongside my sisters, I was blessed to be educated in the tradition of the Marist Sisters. I still vividly remember traveling with my family to Rome in 1999 for the canonisation of Saint Marcellin Champagnat - an extraordinary experience of standing alongside thousands of people from every corner of the globe, all bound together by the same living legacy.

That same profound sense of connection returned to me yesterday as we gathered at the Cathedral with Bishop Steve, the Marist Brothers, members of the wider Catholic community and the other Champagnat Marist schools - St Paul’s, St John’s Hamilton, and Sacred Heart. Coming together in the Eucharist to mark 150 years of Champagnat Marist education in Aotearoa was a powerful reminder of the wider Marist family we belong to.

Saint Marcellin Champagnat’s approach to education was simple, personal, and radical for his time: “To raise children properly, we must love them, and love them all equally.” He taught us that true learning happens through presence, simplicity, and building a genuine family spirit.
|
Looking out at our students alongside those from the other schools, I felt immensely proud to see how naturally that 150-year-old spirit still breathes through Marcellin College today. It is lived out in the way our staff walk beside our young people, how our students look after one another, and our collective drive to Seek the Best in all we do.
|
We stand on the shoulders of generations of Marist Brothers and educators who dedicated their lives to this mission, and we carry their torch forward with immense gratitude and joy.

Curriculum

NCEA Progression Requirements (Level One - Level Two & Level Two - Level Three)
To support successful academic progression, ākonga must meet minimum NCEA credit requirements at Marcellin College, with structured support and planning provided for those who do not meet these thresholds.
|
|
Gateway credits are excluded because they do not contribute to specific subject achievement.
|
|
|
|

|
Senior Practice Exams
Our NCEA Practice Examinations will be held in Week Tahi/One of Term Whā/Four. This examination period will serve as a crucial component of the learning process, and the results could be used as a Derived Grade if your child is absent for valid reasons in the November NCEA Examinations (NZQA - Derived Grades).

As we move through the 2026 school year, student well-being and sense of belonging are at the heart of everything we do. My goal for the pastoral team this year is ensuring that all students take pride in being part of the Marcellin College whānau, where every student feels truly connected, valued, and supported within our school community. We know that when young people feel a genuine sense of connection to their school, they are far more confident, resilient, and empowered to achieve their personal best.

To bring this goal to life, we encourage students to be active in everyday life at school, if this is by joining a new club, participating in sports teams, taking part in mass, or stepping into leadership opportunities. Developing a strong sense of belonging directly strengthens emotional resilience and academic engagement, helping young people feel secure enough to navigate challenges and thrive. To support them on this journey, our staff, Deans, and wider pastoral and counseling teams are always available to provide guidance, encouragement, and a safe space whenever needed.

A thriving school culture relies on strong partnerships between home and school. Whether by attending school events, supporting attendance, volunteering for activities, or maintaining open communication with your child's teachers, your presence makes a profound difference. When students see their families actively engaged in school life, it reinforces their own sense of belonging and school pride.
