The Legacy of St Marcellin Champagnat

A message about our identity.
|
|
Yesterday, we gathered as a whole school to celebrate our Founders’ Mass. It was a beautiful occasion filled with powerful singing, community spirit, and a deep sense of pride.
|
Tomorrow, Saturday 6th June, marks the official Feast Day of St Marcellin Champagnat, the founder of our school.
|
Born in France in 1789, Marcellin was a young priest who looked at the world around him and saw young people who were desperately lacking an education and a sense of purpose. Driven by immense heart and faith, he founded the Marist Brothers with a simple but revolutionary vision: to make Jesus known and loved through the education of young people, especially those most in need. He believed that to bring up children properly, you must love them, and love them all equally.

Today, Marcellin College is a vital part of that global Champagnat Marist legacy. We aren't just a school; we are caretakers of a living tradition that spans over two centuries.
|
Being part of this legacy means we hold high expectations for our young men and women. Marcellin Champagnat was a man of action, hard work, and deep resilience. We want our students to embody those same traits in the classroom, on the sports field, and in how they treat one another every day.
|
Thank you to all our families who supported our Feast Day celebrations this week. Together, we continue to build on the strong foundations St Marcellin left behind.

Yesterday, our school community gathered in faith and joy to celebrate our beautiful Marcellin Champagnat Feast Day Mass.
|
It was a truly uplifting and spiritually moving liturgy, filled with culture, music, heartfelt prayers, and a profound sense of unity that beautifully honoured our founder's enduring legacy.
The true spirit of Marcellin - one of humility, family spirit , and a deep love of work—was palpable throughout the entire celebration, reminding us all of the mission we carry forward every day.

We were deeply blessed to share this sacred occasion with so many vital pillars of our wider community. A heartfelt thank you to everyone who joined hands with us to make this day so special:

Year 11 Art Trip - Papatūānuku Kōkiri Marae Community Gardens and Kai Ika projects
|
|
On Friday 15th May, the Year 11 Art class visited the Papatūānuku Kōkiri Marae. The purpose was to collect information about the community gardens and Kai Ika projects. The ākonga are designing a billboard to raise awareness of the marae’s community projects. We were welcomed with a mihi whakatau, given a guided tour of the gardens and saw the Kai Ika project in action.
|
The Marae’s Kai Ika project is about redistributing snapper heads and frames from fisheries, to people who can use them for kai. Twice a week the adjoining carpark is used to distribute these to people all over Auckland. This provides a food source for the community and prevents wastage of a valuable resource.
|
The class got some great insights into the operation and kaupapa of Papatūānuku Kōkiri Marae and its community based initiatives.

|
Year 7 & 8 Water Skills for Life Swimming Programme
Our Year 7 and 8 ākonga recently took part in the Water Skills for Life swimming programme, a trusted initiative supported by Water Safety New Zealand. It provides important water safety learning for tamariki across Aotearoa and helps ākonga build the skills and confidence to stay safe in and around water.
|
Led by qualified SwimMagic instructors and supported by trained school staff, the lessons focused on key skills including floating, treading water, safe entries and basic rescue and survival techniques.
|
A real highlight was seeing ākonga who were unsure at first gradually give things a go, support each other and enjoy being in the water. It has been great to watch them surprise themselves, overcome fears and grow in confidence.
|
These moments are a strong reminder of how important these experiences are for our ākonga. It has been awesome to see them building confidence in an environment that challenges them in a positive way and encourages perseverance.
|
|
Most importantly, ākonga are developing water confidence and safety skills that could one day help save their lives. We are proud of the effort, resilience and teamwork shown throughout the programme and grateful for the opportunity to provide these valuable learning experiences.
|

We hope all of our players, families, and supporters enjoyed the King’s Birthday long weekend and took the opportunity to rest and recharge for another week of sport.
|
A huge congratulations to the girls who attended the Moana Pasifika representative trials over the weekend. With more than 200 talented athletes participating, the standard was incredibly high, making selection a significant achievement.
