Lessons Beyond the Classroom:

Perspective, Patience, and Perseverance
Welcome back to the start of Term 3! Over the break, I found myself reflecting on a couple of very ordinary - and slightly frustrating - experiences with furniture that surprisingly offered some great insights into how we learn and grow.
The first was a project with some new wardrobes. I had done all the proper planning: measured carefully, spent time researching, arranged delivery, and booked installers. But despite all the preparation, things didn't go to plan. The installers arrived at the wrong time, and then, after one wardrobe was built perfectly, we discovered a deep gash in the panels of the remaining two right at the end of the process. Now comes the long road of returns, redelivery, and reinstallation!
The second experience involved a new table ordered online. It looked fantastic in the photos, but when it arrived, it had distinct, natural branches sticking out all around it. The immediate reaction was to get the chainsaw out and start cutting off the branches to force it into the neat, standard shape that had been envisioned. Thankfully, we decided to step away and leave it overnight. Looking at it with fresh eyes the next morning, we realised it was actually unique, special, and worked beautifully just as it was.
While these might seem like everyday mishaps, they hold valuable lessons for our academic journey this term:
  • Patience and Perseverance: Just like the wardrobe project, we can plan our studies meticulously, but unexpected set-backs will happen. A test result might not go our way, or a project might hit a snag right at the end. Resilience is about managing the frustration, adjusting our plans, and doing the re-work without giving up.
  • Reflection and New Perspectives: Like the table, when a challenge or assignment doesn't look the way we initially expected, our instinct can be to force it into a familiar box or throw our hands up. Sometimes, taking a pause, stepping back, and reflecting allows us to see things in a completely new light. What looked like a flaw at first might actually be a unique strength or a creative solution.
As we kick off this new term, please encourage your sons and daughters to embrace both the disruptions and the unexpected results in their learning. Growth rarely happens in a straight line. However, with perseverance and fresh perspective, we can turn any set-back into success.

          Curriculum
          Term Three is always incredibly busy. It is vital that all student maintain an academic focus throughout the term. If a student is absent from class for any reason, the expectation is that they view their Google Classroom to catch up on missed work:

          Literacy and Numeracy Digital Corequisites

          Corequisite results were released on 23 June for Reading, and on 20 July for Writing and Numeracy. Students can view these results either via their NZQA Login or KAMAR login.

          Any Year 11, 12, or 13 student who did not achieve either Reading, Writing, or Numeracy in May will have the opportunity to sit these again in September. Year 10 student will also have the opportunity to sit these, unless families decide that their child is not ready and will sit these as Year 11 in 2027.
          These are the dates for the upcoming digital corequisites:
          • Tuesday 15 September: literacy (reading) periods one, two, and three
          • Wednesday 16 September: literacy (writing) periods one, two, and three
          • Thursday 17 September: numeracy periods one, two, and three
          Students will need to arrive at school on time and with a charged device for these days.

          These corequisites are vital, as without them, ākonga will not be awarded Level One, Two, or Three NCEA.
          Specific logistics will be emailed to all student and family involved closer to the time.
          There is a preparation day that will be held on Wednesday 9 September, where students will spend periods 1, 2, and 3 preparing for literacy and periods 4 and 5 preparing for numeracy.

          Pastoral Care
          Welcome back to Term 3. I hope that all our students and their families had a restful and restorative break.
          As we settle back into routines, I’d like to take this opportunity to remind everyone of our expectations around uniform. At Marcellin College, we expect every student to wear their full and correct uniform at all times. This not only reflects pride in our school but also demonstrates discipline, unity, and respect - both within our college and to the wider community. Uniforms should not be modified in any way.

          Our school works with SchoolDocs to provide a website for maintaining, updating, and reviewing our school policies. Different policies are under review each term and our school community can submit feedback. Follow the instructions below to contribute to the review.

          2. This will take you to Current review and review instructions.
          3. Enter the username (marcellin) and password (seekthebest).
          4. The policies listed here are the key policies under review this term. Click on the policy you want to review.
          5. Click the “Start your review” button at the top right-hand corner of the page.
          6. Follow the prompts to submit your review.
          Note that you can review any policy that has a “Start your review” button, not just the key policies listed in Current review and review instructions. There will be other related policies in that section of the site open for review.
          If you don't have internet access, school office staff can provide you with printed copies of the policy and a review form.
