Education Outside the Classroom (EOTC)

We strongly believe that experiences outside the classroom reinforce learning by helping students make connections between what they learn at school and the wider world. EOTC provides opportunities for students to demonstrate knowledge, skills, values, attitudes, and key competencies identified in the New Zealand Curriculum.

The EOTC programme is an important part of Marcellin College and aims to provide:

  • Learning opportunities beyond the classroom across all curriculum areas
  • Experiences that encourage students to discover, enjoy, and develop in outdoor, leisure, and recreational contexts
  • Safe learning experiences across a variety of environments

At Marcellin College we aim to provide a rich co-curricular programme which provides the opportunity for each individual to share and develop their passions and interests so that every ākonga uses the unique gifts and talents they have been blessed with to experience a sense of achievement, gain a sense of belonging and contribute to the diversity and wairua we all love so much.

The programme includes activities related to:

  • Special Character
  • The Creative Arts
  • Sport
  • Culture
  • Service and Community Engagement
  • Faculty/Learning Areas

We also encourage ākonga to share their ideas for new groups or activities which we do our best to support.

For sport, we have a state-of-the-art gymnasium which is used for Basketball, Volleyball, Turbo Touch, Badminton and Netball. There are open fields overlooking Monte Cecilia Park as well as court and turf spaces to cover all outdoor sports.

We have a functional weights room attached to the gymnasium. Students train in this space during break times as well as before and after school. Our staff are also able to give them guidance and link them to programmes that will help them to progress toward their goals.

At Marcellin College we run a number of internal sports competitions during lunch times and after school. We also have big events such as Junior Swimming Sports Days and a full school Athletics Day. There is also an opportunity for our students to attend local tournament days as well as national tournaments. 

We take pride in the positive way our students give their best but are models of Marist humility in the sporting arena.

All faculties offer a wide range of trips and events that support classroom learning. Examples include:

  • English: Pop-up Globe Theatre, debating competitions, and reader-writer festivals
  • Mathematics: National Mathex competitions
  • Science: Māngere Mountain, Ambury Farm, Arataki Activity Centre, Auckland Zoo, and North Shore foreshore studies
  • Geography: Waihi and Auckland CBD field trips
  • Health & Physical Education: Athletics championships and sports leadership workshops
  • Religious Education: Year-level retreats and Auckland Catholic Schools Pompallier Shield
  • Business Studies: Young Enterprise Scheme
  • Creative Arts: Drama, dance, and music performances, art gallery visits, and competitions such as Stand Up Stand Out, GenX, YouDance, and Mega Schools Hip Hop
  • Careers & Pathways: University visits, polytechnics, and career-related events

Some activities are not directly linked to the curriculum but provide valuable opportunities to enhance student engagement, fitness, and wellbeing.
