PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE
Social Media and Teenagers

|
A message to Parents with teens.
|
A report circulating in Parliament is considering age limits for social media accounts (Under 16?).
|
Certainly many other countries have implemented bans for Under 16s because of the psychological harm that social media can do to developing brains.
|
My hope is that NZ will be next to ban social media for Under 16s !.
|
The recent law ban on mobile phones during school hours was a start and has reduced many aspects of bullying. Not completely but still a positive journey.
|
That ban emphasised that schools, especially secondary schools, were set up for learning, not social hubs for arm chair warriors or bullying Kings/Queens.
|
The ban reminded us that - gone are the days when some NZ schools were simply baby sitting organisations for children between 8.40am - 3.15pm.
|
The ban reminded us that schools need to reclaim their establishment learning purpose.?
|
So my message to parents of teens?
|
Giving your son or daughter a high end iPhone for “his/her whereabouts” can be misguided.
|
Mobile phones can be used as social weapons!
|
In my experience most bullying behaviour about fellow students / teachers happens at home outside of school hours ie. 3.30pm - 8.40 am!
|
Perhaps we remind ourselves of that rephrased scriptural quote:
|
|
“When your son (daughter) asks for bread [education] ,what father (mother) would give a stone [ mobile phone]!".
|

- Registration for drivers: All student drivers are required to have registered (with car details) with the Deputy Principal, Mr.Darragh.

Marcellin College has a college uniform which is expected to be worn with pride by every student all times. (From Home , At College, From College until they return home).
|
Thank you for your family support here.

- Ties for both Male and Female Year 11, 12 and 13 students are expected to be done up to the highest button. White t-shirts are NOT showing under Junior shirts.
- Only regulation uniform items are permitted.

Marcellin College students have dignity and grooming standards to uphold.
