I hope everyone had a refreshing Easter break.
This newsletter is to keep everyone informed on what’s happening at Marcellin College.
Our role as professional educators for the next generation, has its origins in a profound trust that parents place in us to prepare their own children for future opportunities.
We must continually build on that trust with our results, our sense of community and our intentional expectations.
Really Good news for term1
- Regular attendance T1 (above 90%) = 70% (compare 2025 :48%)
- Chronic absence (6%) (compare 10% in 2025)
- 100% attendance = 94+ students
- Parent support at 2026 Term 1 Whānau evenings approx 70% on average
[Mike D will have attendance PLD on Monday]
Congratulations on the sustained efforts everyone is making. These efforts are significant.
We still have a little way to go to realise the rule of 90! That is 90% regular attendance of 90% of all students.
A long service board has been established for those 20 known staff who have served Marcellin College students, each with a minimum of 20 years. A combined total of 400 years!! Many generations of students can be extremely grateful to these long serving individuals.
At a suitable date, there will be a function to recognise these “Good and Faithful servants”
- Geraldine Corray (Maths) has decided to take medical retirement. We wish her well in the future and thank her.
- Hausia Manoa (Teacher Aide) will be finishing at a time to be confirmed in term 2. We wish him well and thank him.
- Rosanna Fouhy (Principal) Mihi Whakatau will be Thursday 14/05/26 at 10.00 am followed by light refreshments in present library.
The present staffroom (upstairs is plainly not suitable. Location and Capacity are the two major constraints. It is not used as a staffroom.
The present library has been identified as being more suitable, Location and Capacity being key assets.
The staffroom architect is presenting in the upstairs “staffroom" on Wednesday 22/04/26 at 8.00am - 8.40am (Briefing will be this presentation).
This has been confirmed as Room 42 (central, large room, back office) potential for a reading room in 43.
Some issues about this position have been noted.
Thank you to those staff who presently use Room 42 and will have the opportunity to teach in other rooms.
Thank you to Lesieli who will have major changes to the library in this relocation.
6. Rooming Capacity of Marcellin College
Typically schools are funded for 100% utilisation of rooms (ie rooms are used every period of every day of every week).
In practice Timetabling in most schools is around 90-95% rooming capacity.
Marcellin College at present has 64% rooming utilisation (36% underused).
7. Upstairs Staffroom (old staffroom)
This will be the Board/meeting room.
8. Counselling Functions of Marcellin College
Consideration will given to moving counselling upstairs to be part of the Health systems of the College [Back to the past!].
9. Lates system in the mornings
Anecdotally there are too many students arriving late to school and moving straight into form time without obtaining a late pass.
Are the 40 steps to the office a hindrance to getting a pass?
After a discussion with Mike we will trial a new lates system from 8.40am -9.00am. Courtney, as attendance person, will station herself, at these times, outside the deans office and record late to school.
Discussion is needed around the purpose of this room and potential of other uses. Attendance is around 43%. Year 12/13 students should not be sent to this room.
We need to have integrity of authority for students who consistently do not cooperate with Deans/staff.
The consequence system will be shared between Myself and Mike.
Every Friday night - with notice of 24 hours given to parents - of offending student in present Board room.
This will be preceded by communication with families.
12. Marcellin College Fields
A new contract has been let for 45 mowings pa (26 passive pa) of the fields. This gives more possibilities for field use by the College and community.
In addition consideration is being given to a North South alignment of Rugby and Football fields - and removal of the cricket pitch. (as distinct from an East West alignment).
At Marcellin College there appears to be very little connection of the past (people) to the everyday life of Marcellin College. I have labelled this as “Historical amnesia".
- Academic Excellence board in Foyer established
- Catholic Character leadership board in Chapel
- Sports Prefects Board established in Gym foyer
- Known Sports code Captains Board in gym Foyer
- Principals of Marcellin College board (1st week of term)

The walls of Schools are often referred to as the Hidden Curriculum.
As a school we need to explore ways we can all present student work, student achievements as incentives and recognition.
Education has been described as sending Living messages to a future time !
So Thank you to all for your great efforts mostly very quiet and hidden efforts, in helping another (future) generation.
Your reward will be when the Just rise, if not sooner!
