|
Term Three is well and truly underway, filled with a wide range of activities and achievements. As you will read later in the newsletter, our First XI football team has had a fantastic season, moving into the B grade and reaching the semifinals, while other winter sports teams continue to perform strongly. In the last two weeks, we have welcomed ākonga/students from China and Japan, and our Year 13 Geography class enjoyed an overnight trip to Rotorua. Our ākonga are also actively engaged in service and faith-based activities: senior ākonga are mentoring younger ākonga at St. Therese School on a Rāpare/Thursday afternoon each week; all our Year 11 ākonga attended a retreat at St. John Vianney in Hillsborough; eight of our Year 10 ākonga travelled to St Ignatius of Loyola Catholic College to listen to a talk by
|

|
|
Br Guy, who is the Head of the Vatican Observatory and the Pope’s astronomer; six of our ākonga attended the Catholic Caring Mass held at Christ the King in Owairaka. The Catholic Caring Mass is a celebration of the foundation's work and recognises ākonga who demonstrate exceptional care and commitment to their community. Margaret Finefeuiaki, Noah Collins, Krizette Ramos, Trisha Caraig, Aylen Pau-Valenzuela, and Moana Pulu all received Caring Certificates and represented themselves and the wider Marcellin community with pride. Our Sacramental Programme has also continued this term, with ākonga visiting the Cathedral of St. Patrick and St. Joseph as part of their faith journey. This programme culminates in our Sacramental Mass next Rāpare/Thursday at 11:30 a.m. in the gym. We hope to see you there to share in this special occasion.

FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE
Financial assistance is available to assist families who may need financial support with the payment of Attendance Dues for preference students attending both primary and secondary Catholic schools in Auckland Diocese.
|
Families facing financial difficulties can contact their school office, their Parish Priest, or Auckland Common Fund Ltd at the Catholic Diocese of Auckland on 09-360-3040 for further information.

Marcellin Spirit Awards
At Marcellin College we use the name ‘Marcellin Spirit’ for Positive Behaviour for Learning. Marcellin Spirit teaches positive behaviour for learning by teaching expectations to all ākonga. We do this via specific Marcellin Spirit lessons, as well as by rewarding expected behaviours. We link our expected behaviours to the Marist Pillars. Our free and frequent reward system is whānau points, which ākonga can track using the MyMahi platform.
Marcellin Spirit certificates are awarded to the ākonga with the most whānau points each week of the term. Congratulations to the following recipients for

Curriculum News
|
|
|
Mahuru/September Digital Corequisites
Any Year 11, 12, or 13 ākonga who did not achieve either Reading, Writing, or Numeracy in Haratua/May will have the opportunity to sit these again in Mahuru/September. Year 10 ākonga will also have the opportunity to sit these, unless whānau decide that their tamaiti/child is not ready and will sit these as Year 11 in 2026. Letters have been emailed home to whānau of Year 10 ākonga who are not yet achieving at the level aligned with achievement of the corequisites. If you have received one of these emails, please reply with your decision.

These are the dates for the upcoming digital corequisites:
|
- Rātū/Tuesday 2 Mahuru/September: literacy (reading) periods one, two, and three
- Rāapa/Wednesday 3 Mahuru/September: literacy (writing) periods one, two, and three
- Rāpare/Thursday 4 Mahuru/September: numeracy periods one, two, and three
Ākonga will need to arrive at school on time and with a charged device for these days.
|
|
These corequisites are vital, as without them, ākonga will not be awarded Level One, Two, or Three NCEA.
|
Specific logistics will be emailed to all ākonga and whānau involved closer to the time.
|
|
There is a preparation rā/day that will be held on Rāapa/Wednesday 27 Hereturikōkā/August, where ākonga will spend periods 1, 2, and 3 preparing for literacy and periods 4 and 5 preparing for numeracy.
|
|
Digital Corequisite Results
|
Corequisite results were released on 25 Pipiri/June for Reading, and on 14 Hōngongoi/July for Writing and Numeracy. Ākonga can view these results either via their NZQA Login or KAMAR login.
|
|
|
2026 Option Selection
Year 10, 11, and 12 ākonga will soon be asked to select their options for 2026. Information regarding this process has been shared at year-level assemblies this week. On Rāhina/Monday 11 Hereturikōkā/August, Senior Course Information Booklets will be shared with ākonga via email and posted on the school website for whānau to access. KAMAR course selection officially opens this day. Ākonga will then have until Rāmere/Friday 22 Hereturikōkā/August to make their choices. Kaiako kaitiaki and kaiārahi will be available to support ākonga throughout this process.
|
Senior Practice Exams
Our NCEA Practice Examinations will be held in Week Tahi/One of Term Whā/Four. This examination period will serve as a crucial component of the learning process, and the results could be used as a Derived Grade if your child is absent for valid reasons in the November NCEA Examinations (NZQA - Derived Grades).

Road Safety Reminder
As we begin a new term, we would like to remind all families of the importance of keeping our ākonga / students safe before and after school, particularly around the busy roads surrounding Marcellin College. With many of our ākonga walking to and from school, we ask everyone to remain alert, patient, and cautious during these high-traffic times.
|
If you are picking up or dropping off your tamaiti / child by car, please take extra care in our front driveway. This area can become very congested at the beginning and end of the school day, and it is essential that we all work together to keep it safe for everyone. In particular, we ask that drivers avoid stopping or parking on the painted white crossing strips at the front of the school. These areas are designated for students to exit safely, and blocking them puts others at risk.
|

With over 15 years of experience in policing and a strong focus on youth, I’m here to support students, staff, and families through safety education, road patrols, and community engagement. At the heart of Marcellin Champagnat’s mission, is a simple yet powerful belief: to
teach young people, we must first love them. Inspired by the Gospel and the example of Jesus, Marcellin devoted his life to caring for and educating those most in need.
|
His deep faith and compassion remind us that true pastoral care means being present, showing kindness, and serving others selflessly. As a Marist community, we continue to live out this message by fostering a spirit of love, inclusion, and support in all that we do.
|
|
As Year 10 students / ākonga step into 2025, this year marks an important time of growth, reflection, and discovery.
|
|
|
|
|
Our hope is that each ākonga begins to uncover their unique strengths, deepen their sense of identity, and take greater responsibility for their learning and choices. Inspired by the values of Marcellin Champagnat, we encourage a spirit of perseverance, respect, and compassion — building a year level community where everyone is supported, included, and challenged to be their best.

May this be a year where Year 10's grow not only academically, but personally and spiritually — becoming young people of integrity who lead with kindness and live with purpose.

Ms Michelle Diaz
|
|
|
Kia ora koutou, my name is Michelle Diaz and I am the Year 11 Kaiārahi/Dean. My Deaning journey began in 2023, and it's been both humbling and rewarding to journey alongside the Year 11 and their whānau.
|
I am enjoying building strong relationships with each of my students / ākonga and being an affirming presence in their life.
|
My goal for the Year 11's is to develop into leaders deeply committed to serving their school community; God comes first and as written in Micah 6:8 “...and what does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God.”
|
It's a privilege to guide the Year 11's as they grow into servant leaders, living out these values with courage and compassion.

|
|
|
|
On Friday 18th July, our music department hosted a visit from the Mt Waverley College Stage Band and Symphonic Bands from Melbourne, Australia. They brought 50 music students with them who got to rehearse and perform and have dinner with our very own Marcellin College Jazz Saints ākonga. It was a lovely afternoon of learning and the performances which included 2 combined items between the 2 school bands which were well received and supported by parents and staff who came along for the free evening concert.

Sports News
|
|
As we approach the end of week two, our sports teams continue to impress everyone with their dedication and hard work this season. The results have been outstanding so far, with most teams securing victories in the majority of their matches. Starting off with our Football team taking on the win 4-1 against Lynfield College.
|
Now turning to our basketball team. Our Senior Boys Basketball taking the 'W' with a big win 58-33 against Sacred Heart also our Junior Boys Basketball securing a massive win 65-36 against St Kentigan Giants, great to already hear 4 wins to start off our season.
|
We move onto Netball, Unfortunately our Yr 7&8 Girls weren’t able to play on Monday night facing a sad default, Then Our Yr 10 Cubs had an amazing win against Baradene College winning 21-8, also our Senior Gold Netball girls had a very strong push gaining the win 27-18 against Epsom Girls Grammar.
|
Lastly we have our First XIII Rugby boys having a close game against Papatoetoe College sadly losing 24-12.
We’d like to give a big thank you to all the coaches and teachers who have supported our teams so far. Your time, encouragement, and dedication to our students growth in sport means so much not just to them, but to all of us who cheer them on. We’re excited to see the amazing talent our students continue to show, and we look forward to seeing where their passion and hard work might take them in the future.

617 Day
|
|
It's back for 2025! "617 Day", our Marcellin College cultural festival & whānau day will take place on Friday 19th September, Term Three. The school day will finish at 1:40pm, and the festival will officially begin at 2pm. The cultural performances will commence at approximately 2:30pm in the school La Valla Gymnasium. There will be kai/food and inu/drink available from stalls on the school field which will be open until 5pm.
|
We would love to offer a range of food and beverages from a range of cultures at our festival. If you would like to run a stall, please contact ponel@marcellin.school.nz to register a stall.
|

Lost Property Notice
We kindly ask that you clearly label your child’s belongings. School Lockers are available to hire each year to help ākonga keep their belonging safe.
|
Each day, our Health and Physical Education kaiako find jackets, jumpers, and PE gear left behind in the changing rooms and around the gym. Unfortunately, every year we end up discarding unclaimed clothing and footwear.
|
|
If your child has lost an item of their school uniform, PE gear or other non uniform items please check with student services or the gymnasium.
