Tēnā koutou and Advent greetings to you all,
|
This will be our final newsletter for the year. My heartfelt thanks go out to our Marcellin community - our committed Board members, our dedicated kaimahi / staff, the Marist brothers for their example and continued presence, our awesome ākonga and their whānau, all who have prayed for, and supported us and our kura in so many ways this year.
|
It was a wonderful occasion to gather as a junior school for the Advent Liturgy and celebrate our Years 7 to 10 ākonga academic award winners at the Middle School Prizegiving yesterday. At our staff end-of-year function, we honoured the kaiako who will leave the Marcellin path of their journey in life to begin a new one.
|
The final junior school full academic report will be emailed to all whānau this week, please read through these with your tamariki to develop goals for 2025 that will help them ‘Seek the Best’!
|
This year has been filled with opportunities to demonstrate the Marist Pillar of the Year, Aroha ki te Mahi, especially in the last three weeks with the ‘Te Wiki o Aroha ki te Mahi / Love of Work’ service weeks. In 2025, the Marist Pillar of the year is Ki te Huarahi o Maria / In the Way of Mary.

A letter will be emailed to all whānau enrolled at Marcellin College 2025 (new and current whānau) in mid-January / Kohitātea with the key dates and times for the first two weeks of Term One to ensure your tamariki / child(ren) are ready to learn for the new year. You must update the Student Services team (office@marcellin.school.nz) if your contact details have changed.

As we prepare for Christmas, may this season of Advent: a time of waiting, preparation, and reflection, remind us of the greatest gift of all—the love of God made manifest in Christ Jesus.

Staff Farewells

As we wrap up 2024, I would like to thank our amazing ākonga, dedicated staff, supportive whānau, committed Board Members and wonderful community. Your contributions have made this year at Marcellin College special. To all ākonga who are moving on, especially our Year 13 leaders, we farewell you with pride, praying for your continued success and guidance as you embark on the next chapter of your journey. To our departing staff, we extend our heartfelt appreciation for your dedicated service and the many blessings you have brought to our school – we wish you peace, aroha and success in your future endeavours.
|
We also extend our deepest gratitude to departing Board Member, Mati Tuautu Filemoni Timoteo, as he steps down from his role as a Parent Representative. Filemoni has been a valued member of the Marcellin College community since 2016, dedicating the last eight years to the Board, including six years as Presiding Member. His selfless service, wisdom, and leadership have shaped and enriched our school. Filemoni, your unwavering faith and commitment to Marcellin have been an incredible blessing. We pray that God’s abundant blessings continue to guide you and your whānau, bringing love, strength, and joy in all the plans He has prepared for you.

This term, we are excited to see our ākonga embody the spirit of Love of Work through various service initiatives happening in our school community.

Love of Work Week Service Projects
|
On Friday 29th November we had our Year 10 ākonga / students mentoring St Therese ākonga / students for their Fun Day.
|
On Monday 2nd December Year 9 (9Tui & 9Weka) were at St Therese School, weeding around the obstacle course, clearing the garden, sorting out the sports shed and raking leaves. Ms. Laura Geaney the Principal St Therese doesn't have a caretaker and the staff do this on their weekends.
|

Celebrating Ākonga Success
|
|
|
Marcellin Spirit Awards
At Marcellin College we use the name ‘Marcellin Spirit’ for Positive Behaviour for Learning. Marcellin Spirit teaches positive behaviour for learning by teaching expectations to all ākonga. We do this via specific Marcellin Spirit lessons, as well as by rewarding expected behaviours. We link our expected behaviours to the Marist Pillars. Our free and frequent reward system is whānau points, which ākonga can track using the MyMahi platform.
Marcellin Spirit certificates are awarded to the ākonga with the most Whānau points each week of the term. Congratulations to the following recipients for Week 6 and Week 7 of Term 4:

Robert Ned Covich Award Ceremony
|
|
|
Congratulations to Angelie Perillo who was awarded the Robert Ned Covich Scholarship this year. The ceremony was held at the Pompallier Centre, Ponsonby where all of the recipients from the Auckland Catholic Secondary schools were acknowledged.
|
Angelie also graduated from the 3 Kapu Kāwhe mentorship programme which celebrates young leaders from the Multiethnic Young Leaders NZ (MYLN) initiative. The graduation ceremony was held at the Park Hyatt last month.

Final Year 7-10 Reports
|
Whānau of all Year 7 - 10 ākonga will receive a final, full report for 2024 via email on Rāmere / Friday 6 o Hakihea / December. This will be a summary of all learning and achievements for the year.
|
|
|
|
Digital Literacy and Numeracy Corequisite Results
|
Results from the Mahuru/September digital literacy corequisite assessments are now available. Ākonga will need to log into their NZQA account to view these results: NZQA - Ākonga Login Steps. Any ākonga who did not gain these this year will have two opportunities to sit these digital corequisites in 2025.

|
NCEA Achievement Information
|
As Year 11 and 12 ākonga prepare to advance to Year 12 and 13, they must do so with the necessary skills to succeed at these levels. With NCEA now requiring both Literacy and Numeracy standards to be met before qualification, the pathway is no longer straightforward. In light of this, ākonga must achieve a minimum of 40 credits to progress to the next year level. The upcoming reports will provide a clear overview of how many credits ākonga have earned and how many are still needed and available. Attendance at and success in external exams will be crucial to ensure ākonga meet the required credit threshold.

|
Our school Jazz Band performed at the Onehunga Community Christmas event at Jellicoe Park last week Friday 29th November .

Eden Art School Awards
The Eden Art Schools Award brings together selected artists from our four main Auckland art institutions: Elam, AUT, UNITEC and Whitecliffe. Each art school nominates 5 students to be represented in this exhibition.
|
I am proud to say that ex Marcellin student, Crystal Biano was selected to represent AUT.

The pair of paintings, Fragments from Home, explores the Asian diaspora experience through the lens of being a second-generation immigrant in New Zealand. They examine the impact of my cultural heritage on personal identity and nostalgia, weaving in the experiences shared with my sisters, which shaped our collective memory.

This year’s Senior Art External submissions involved the usual last minute rush, with late working sessions at school and at home. Some authentic and outstanding work was produced and I am proud to present some of the highlights to you. Thank you for supporting these ākonga through this demanding submission.

Year 10 Fashion and Textiles Community Project
As part of their final project, the Year 10 Fashion and Textiles class embarked on a meaningful initiative to give back to the community. The students designed and created masks, capes, and crowns for the children at Little Moas Daycare in Mount Wellington. While the entire class contributed to crafting these thoughtful gifts, a group of 10 students had the special opportunity to personally deliver them to the daycare.
|
The children were thrilled to receive the beautifully made items, expressing their excitement and gratitude. As a token of appreciation, each student was gifted a pencil case or bag filled with goodies by the daycare.
|
|
This project was an incredible way for our Year 10 students to use their skills creatively while making a positive impact in their community.
|
|

Blues Fill the Bus campaign
|
On Rāapa/Wednesday 4th Hakihea/December, nine senior boys helped take our non-perishable food donations to the Blues Headquarters, contributing to the Blues Fill the Bus campaign for 2024. All the food will be donated to some amazing charities, including The Village Community Trust, South Seas, and Whakaora Kai.
|
Our ākonga then had the chance to join in on the day's events, such as observing the Blues open training session, meet and greet opportunities with the players, and games and competitions.
|

Free throat swabbing for Pacific and Māori Children
|
Please find attached the list of pharmacies offering free throat swabbing for Pacific and Māori children and young people in Te Tai Tokerau that might be travelling up north over the holiday break.
