As we journey through this Easter season of reflection and celebration, we recently marked Ascension Day, a powerful reminder of Christ’s mission and promise to be with us always. Next week on the 6th Pipiri / June, we will come together as a Marcellin whānau to celebrate the Feast Day of St Marcellin Champagnat, the founder of the Marist Brothers and the inspiration behind our college’s identity and values.
|
This special occasion will be marked with the celebration of the Eucharist, the heart of our Catholic faith. It is a sacred moment for us to come together in prayer and gratitude, honouring St Marcellin’s legacy of service, humility, and love for young people. Through the Eucharist, we not only give thanks for his example but also renew our commitment to living out the Marist Pillars in our daily lives—following Ki te Huarahi o Maria / In the way of Mary, with faith, compassion, and a spirit of community.

Ngā mihi kia koutou / thank you very much to our incredible cast and crew of Disney’s Moana Jr. who demonstrated Aroha ki te Mahi / Love of work by sharing their gifts, talents, dedication, and hard work in bringing this vibrant production to life. Your creativity and teamwork truly captured the spirit of the story and made us all proud.

I also extend my sincere thanks to our whānau and wider Marcellin College community who came along to support and celebrate the performances. Your Aroaro / Presence reflects the strength of our whānau-school partnerships, which is a key focus of our annual implementation plan—working together to support the success and growth of every learner. Ngā mihi nui for walking this journey with us.

These hui are a vital part of your tamariki / child’s educational journey at Marcellin College, providing an opportunity for our whānau and kaiako to come together to discuss progress, set goals, and strengthen the partnership that supports your tamariki’s success. As we come to the end of the week, we reflect on Ascension Day and our patron St Marcellin's Feast Day, two significant moments in our Catholic and Marist calendar that call us to reflect on a common theme: faith in action, lived through service, humility, and love. Just as Jesus commissioned his disciples at the Ascension, and as St Marcellin responded to God’s call to serve young people with compassion and determination, may we continue to live with purpose, to support one another, and make Jesus Christ known and loved.

Nau mai, haere mai Michael Darragh - Tumuaki Tuarua Pastoral and Engagement
|
|
We are delighted to welcome Mr Michael Darragh to Marcellin College as our new Tumuaki Tuarua – Pastoral and Engagement, on the 16th Pipiri / June this term.
|
As an experienced educational leader at Māngere College for the last 11 years, Michael brings with him a wealth of experience as a senior leader and Head of Department, with a strong track record in improving ākonga achievement and promoting equity for all ākonga. His leadership is grounded in empowering others, fostering strong professional relationships, and upholding high expectations for learning and behaviour.
|
Michael’s educational kaupapa and philosophy as well as his passion for creating positive, inclusive learning environments, align well with our Marist Pillars, particularly the Marist Pillar of the year, Ki te Huarahi o Maria / In the Way of Mary, as he leads with compassion, humility, and a deep commitment to nurturing the potential of every ākonga.
|

I’m incredibly excited to be joining the Marcellin College community as Deputy Principal. It’s a real privilege to become part of a school with such a strong sense of faith, family spirit, and a deep commitment to holistic education. I’m really looking forward to working alongside the dedicated staff, students, and wider whānau to build on the great work already being done.
|
Originally from the United Kingdom, I moved to New Zealand in 2011 with my wife and our three daughters, hoping to grow both professionally and personally while enjoying a fulfilling family life. I spent the first ten years of my teaching career in London, specialising in Physical Education and building a strong foundation in classroom teaching and student engagement.
|
Since settling in New Zealand, I’ve proudly served the Māngere College community for 15 years. During that time, I’ve taken on a range of roles—including Head of Physical Education & Health, Within and Across School Leader for our Kahui Ako, and most recently, Assistant Principal. I completed my Master’s in Educational Leadership in 2021, which fuelled my passion for staff and student wellbeing and strengthened my commitment to academic achievement as a key part of holistic education.
|
My relational leadership style has helped lead meaningful initiatives, such as introducing the Kainga system at Māngere College to support students’ sense of belonging and wellbeing—both of which are vital to a positive, thriving school culture.
|
Outside of school, I like to stay active. I enjoy running and regularly take part in half marathons. I’m also a big fan of football and rugby, and love keeping up with a wide range of sports. When I’m not running, I’m often out kayaking, paddle boarding, or walking our two Labradors with my family.
|
At Marcellin College, I hope to contribute to a warm, inclusive environment where every student feels seen, supported, and inspired to succeed. I’m stepping into this new chapter with enthusiasm and a deep sense of respect for the community I’m now privileged to be part of.

We are your very own student council for 2025. This year we are focusing on uplifting ākonga engagement within school and boosting our attendance. Our role at Marcellin college is to be the voices and representatives for all year levels, which is why our Student Council consists of Year Levels 8-13.
|
|
Our year 7 ākonga voices are heard through google forms and interactions from our Student council representatives at their year level assemblies.
|
Our focus for this term is to ensure our ākonga are met with fun, new and engaging activities such as Lunchtime Whanau competitions. These lunchtime whanau competitions promote healthy and competitive activities for our ākonga to participate in. We encourage our students to voice their opinions, ideas and feedback in regards to key areas which we need to improve in. Once we receive this information, our council connect with Staff members and prefects to ensure this feedback creates a response. We receive this feedback through our forms and our very own suggestion boxes. Suggestion boxes are to be placed around school as ākonga are encouraged to place their thoughts and ideas within the boxes so that we as the Student council, are able to reflect upon the feedback we receive and create action plans to better ākonga engagement in sight of what they find is the best way to do so. We truly believe that 2025 will be a year of learning, growth and improvement with our actions being led by our Marcellin College Pillars, seeking the best in all we do!

Financial assistance is available to assist families who may need financial support with the payment of Attendance Dues for preference students attending both primary and secondary Catholic schools in Auckland Diocese.

Marcellin Spirit Awards
At Marcellin College we use the name ‘Marcellin Spirit’ for Positive Behaviour for Learning. Marcellin Spirit teaches positive behaviour for learning by teaching expectations to all ākonga. We do this via specific Marcellin Spirit lessons, as well as by rewarding expected behaviours. We link our expected behaviours to the Marist Pillars. Our free and frequent reward system is whānau points, which ākonga can track using the MyMahi platform.

In week 4 we had our Year 7 & Year 8 Retreats at St Francis Retreat Centre.
|
The Year 7 Retreat was led by our La Valla and Special Character prefects. Our Year 7s enjoyed the whanaungatanga and reflective activities centered around the theme of “When did we see you, Lord”. Many thanks to Ms Sutton, Miss Huggins and Mr Pillay for running this Retreat.
|
|
Our Year 8 Retreat was called “Hear Me’. Our Year 8s reflected on how we need to present in listening to what God wants for us in our lives. They enjoyed nature walks, reflecting on what we need to do to build the Body of Christ and how we need to listen to God in the busyness of our everyday lives. Many thanks to Mr Leavasa and Ms Johnson for helping to run this Retreat.

In week 5 we celebrated Spanish Language Week. Our school Chaplain, Fr Alex de la Sotta is also Chaplain of the Latin American Chaplaincy. We celebrated a beautiful Spanish Language Mass, led by Ms Gurrung-Diaz’s Yr 13 RE class. Many thanks to the Cormier family for the food provided to share after the Eucharistic celebration.

This week we celebrated Catholic Schools Day on Wednesday 29th May. Our junior classes learnt about the history of Catholic Schools in Aotearoa and reflected on how we at Marcellin College live our Catholic Faith.

Next week we celebrate our Feast Day Mass. We celebrate the life and work of our Patron Saint - Marcellin Champagnat. The theme of our Mass is ‘Living Saints’. We look forward to celebrating with you all.

Our Sacramental Programme also begins next week and we ask you to please pray the prayer below for our ākonga, as they prepare themselves to receive the Sacraments of Baptism, Reconciliation, Holy Eucharist and Confirmation. This will be on Thursday August 7th at the Sacramental Mass.

Heavenly Father,
We thank You for the gift of new life in Christ.
As these beloved souls prepare to receive the Sacraments of Initiation,

open their hearts to Your grace and truth.
|
In Baptism, clothe them with Christ,
wash away all sin, and fill them with the light of Your presence.

In Confirmation, send forth Your Holy Spirit to strengthen them—
that they may boldly live out their faith with courage, love, and joy.

Engagement Reports
Whānau of all Year 7 - 13 ākonga will receive another engagement report via email in Term Two, on Rāmere/Friday, Weeks 6 and 8. The purpose of these is to keep whānau regularly informed about their child's engagement in their learning. We encourage you to have a positive and constructive conversation with your child about their engagement in each of their subjects. Here is a reminder of the criteria for engagement:

This will be followed by two progress hui afternoons, on Rāapa/Wednesday 18th Pipiri/June and Rāpare/Thursday 19th Pipiri/June from 2 pm - 6 pm. These hui are an important opportunity for parents/caregivers to speak with kaiako and discuss how best to support academic achievement.

Plagiarism and AI Reminders

With the exponential growth of AI (Artificial Intelligence), there are opportunities for ākonga to use AI to help them with learning. Ākonga must use AI carefully, however, and not use it to complete assignments or parts of assignments for them. Ākonga have had these Authenticity Info slides shared with them to help them understand what authenticity is, and where AI can impact that. As we move through the term, it’s been encouraging to witness the energy and spirit across our kura. I wanted to take a moment to share a few important highlights from the pastoral space this week.
|
|
Pastoral Care at Marcellin – High expectations, Whanaungatanga & Shared Vision
|
This week we celebrated Hauora Week – a time to focus on our wellbeing and remind ourselves of the importance of looking after all aspects of our health: taha tinana (physical), taha hinengaro (mental/emotional), taha wairua (spiritual), and taha whānau (social).
|
A key message we’re sharing with ākonga is: speak up and speak out – being a leader is not always saying what is needed, but doing what is needed. A part of being a Marcellin student means being the best version of yourself, setting that bar and working hard to get there.
|
This term I am excited to share a long overdue introduction from our kaiārahi – the mentors who walk alongside your children. This is a chance to get to know the people who help guide, support and nurture your tamaiti day-to-day. As whānau, your connection with us is vital – together we create a shared vision for your child’s success, growth and wellbeing at Marcellin.

Year 13 Kaiārahi - Ms Jess Stenberg
|
My name is Jess Stenberg, and I have had the privilege of being the Year 13 Kaiārahi for the past six years. It has been an absolute joy to witness our ākonga grow, mature, and flourish into confident young adults, ready to step into the world beyond school.
|
As a physical education teacher, I am passionate about sport, and I continue to play hockey for Papatoetoe. Through countless conversations with my students, I’ve come to understand the hopes, dreams, and unique strengths each of them carries. It is my hope that they continue to pursue their passions and strive for success in whatever path they choose.
|
|
A quote by Marcellin Champagnat that continues to guide me in my role is, “To teach children you must first love them, and love them all equally,” along with “See how they love one another.” These words resonate deeply with my pastoral philosophy. I believe that when students feel genuinely supported, loved, and cared for, they build the confidence and self-belief they need to grow into leaders and pursue their dreams with purpose.

Suggestions as the cold season is approaching:

1. If you have asthma or think you might have asthma, please come see us at the health clinic so that we can assist you in keeping asthma under control.

Health & Safety Notices

Marcellin College Lockdown Practice / Drill:
At Marcellin College, the safety and wellbeing of our ākonga and kaimahi / staff is a top priority. As part of our commitment to providing a safe learning environment, we continue to strengthen our ability to respond effectively to emergencies.
|
To support this, we have been working alongside Harrison Tew®, a specialist organisation in emergency management for schools. Their procedures have been successfully implemented in schools across Aotearoa, and they bring expertise that complements our college’s approach to care and preparedness.
|
On Rāpare / Thursday 12th Pipiri / June, our senior leadership team and kaimahi will be undertaking specialised training with Harrison Tew® to ensure we are equipped to manage a range of emergency scenarios.
|
Our ākonga will also be guided on how to respond appropriately in the event of an emergency. These instructions will be age-appropriate and delivered either by an expert advisor from Harrison Tew®.
|
To put our procedures into practice, we will be holding a lockdown exercise on Rāpare / Thursday 12th Pipiri / June. Please be aware that you will receive a notification from the school during this time. It is important that your emergency contact details are current and accurate. The notification will clearly state that this is a practice drill and further updates will be made available via our school website.
|
In the event of a real emergency, we kindly ask that you do not come to the school or call the office, as this can disrupt emergency responses and place further strain on the situation. We trust in your understanding and support in helping us keep our school community safe.
|
Road Works
As part of the Bus Shelter Renewal Programme, Auckland Transport will be replacing the existing bus shelter on Mount Albert Road, opposite Marcellin College (646 Mount Albert Road, Royal Oak).
|
Work Schedule:
Wednesday 28 May – Friday 30 May
Between 7:00 AM and 6:00 PM daily
|
To ensure the safety of construction crews and the public, Traffic Management measures will be in place throughout the works:
|

A temporary speed limit of 30 km/h will be enforced in the vicinity of the work site.
|

Stop/Go traffic management will operate as needed.
|

|
Sections of the footpath near the bus stop will be closed, and pedestrians will be detoured around the area.
|

Traffic Controllers will be onsite to assist and guide both vehicles and pedestrians safely through the work zone.
|
Bus Stop Closure:
The bus stop at 646 Mount Albert Road will be temporarily closed during construction.
A temporary bus stop will be set up just outside the work zone to maintain service access for passengers.

Sports
|
|
|
|
Entering week 5 with huge successes from our sports teams. All our sports teams have shown outstanding commitment and determination these past 2 weeks with their wins and losses, but we can still improve our skills and talents through practice and training.
|
All 3 of our Netball teams have shown us an impressive performance with all 3 grades winning their game this past weekend still keeping their undefeated title. Our Senior and Junior Basketball team are also showing us great results by winning their games last week with our Junior boys dominating Parnell College 77-19. Our Football team had a home game this weekend, winning their game against St Peter’s College 3-0. Unfortunately our first XIII Rugby team tried their best against St Paul’s but couldn’t obtain the victory losing 4-28.
Congratulations to our Junior Boys Basketball team for being our team of the month!

They have shown great success with their wins against the opposing teams being one of our many undefeated teams within this season.
|
A special thanks to their manager Mr Ratnam for keeping an eye on the boys as well as managing them this season.

|
APO Orchestra Music Trip
Our current Year 9 music class had the chance to attend an Educational Concert by the Auckland Philharmonia at the Auckland Town Hall.
|
This concert fitted in with their current unit of study about the instruments of the Orchestra.
|
The students were very well behaved and did very well to show patience and respect during the long concert. Everyone enjoined the experience and came away with a better understanding of the Orchestra.
|
Thank you to our two Seniors Zion & Semu who supported our Year 9 ākonga and Ms Tokoma for her support as staff member on the trip.
|

Young, Free & Pacific
Marcellin College took 15 Year 11 and 12 ākonga to the annual Young, Free & Pacific (YFP) gathering, held on the 21st and 22nd of May at C3 Church in Ellerslie, Auckland.
|
Young, Free & Pacific provides ākonga with the opportunity to be the ‘leaders of today’, coming together in a space where they can be unapologetically Young, Free, and Pacific.
|
Our ākonga listened to inspiring stories from leaders within the Pacific community and took part in creative workshops that encouraged them to express their unique voices. They also engaged in talanoa with like-minded rangatahi and panel experts, exploring the daily challenges faced by Pacific youth.
|
|
It was an enriching and empowering experience for the young men and women of Marcellin College.
|
|

Marcellin College Students Perform at St. Mary's Catholic School Filipino Week Celebration
|
|
On Friday 16th May, some of our ākonga brought vibrant Filipino culture to St. Mary's Catholic School in Ellerslie. As part of the primary school's Filipino Language and Culture Week, the Marcellin College performers showcased a traditional Filipino dance, captivating the audience and enriching the school's cultural celebrations.
|

We are proud to celebrate the outstanding achievement of James MacGillivray, a former Marcellin College ākonga who attended from 1983 to 1989. James has recently been appointed as a High Court Judge, a role that recognises his exceptional legal career, leadership, and dedication to justice in Aotearoa New Zealand.

The Catholic Diocese of Auckland is seeking a methodical, cheerful, dedicated, and highly efficient person for the role of Administration Assistant to the Operations Manager, Auckland Common Fund Limited to provide administration and operational support.
|
This is a part-time role of 24 hours per week, Monday to Friday, with flexibility of hours between 9.30am and 3.30pm. Days/hours flexible for the right candidate.

Excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills, along with proficient IT competency in Word, Excel, knowledge/experience of Internal Database or CRM systems (Trello) and Document Management Tools i.e. SharePoint.
