The last two weeks of this term have been busy. Our Year 13 ākonga had their annual retreat, Yr 10 Business Studies ākonga attended the Deloitte Grow celebration, both Yr 12 and 13 Drama presented evening performances for assessment, Yr 10 Geography visited Maungakiekie as part of their learning, and ākonga from Years 9 - 13 travelled first to Kerikeri to perform, and then to Tauranga to participate in the National Jazz Festival. One of our jazz groups won bronze and another won silver!

Term Two is only nine weeks this year. And there is a lot to fit into these nine weeks. Alongside academic reports and progress hui evenings, we have our Champagnat Day Mass and Whānau Singing Competition in June. The month before this we have our school production of Disney’s Moana Jr. Tickets are on sale now at Moana Jr. - Auckland - Eventfinda.

Attendance has been a focus for us this term, and it is pleasing to see that we have seen some improvement since last year. Let’s ensure we maintain these levels, or better yet, improve them for Term Two. Overall attendance for Term One this year was:

- Yr 7: 91%
- Yr 8: 87.2%
- Yr 9: 88.3%
- Yr 10: 80.1%
- Yr 11: 82.3%
- Yr 12: 83.3%
- Yr 13: 81.5%
- Whole School: 83.7%
We finished Term One with a whole school Easter Liturgy. This was an opportunity to remind us all what the purpose of the upcoming holiday is. Ngā mihi o te Aranga ki a koutou katoa / Easter blessings to you all.

Marcellin Spirit Awards
At Marcellin College we use the name ‘Marcellin Spirit’ for Positive Behaviour for Learning. Marcellin Spirit teaches positive behaviour for learning by teaching expectations to all ākonga. We do this via specific Marcellin Spirit lessons, as well as by rewarding expected behaviours. We link our expected behaviours to the Marist Pillars. Our free and frequent reward system is whānau points, which ākonga can track using the MyMahi platform.
Marcellin Spirit certificates are awarded to the ākonga with the most whānau points each week of the term. Congratulations to the following recipients for Week 9 & 10 of Term One:

🌿Year 13 retreat 🌿 – Saints in Sneakers 👟✨
|
|
Last Wednesday, 2nd April, our Year 13 ākonga stepped away from the usual school day for a special retreat experience focused on connection, reflection, and preparing for life beyond Marcellin.
|
The day was filled with laughter, games, and moments of real whanaungatanga as students took time to connect with one another and reflect on the journey ahead. Through engaging workshops and honest kōrero, they explored the idea of influence — the kind they carry now, and the kind they hope to have in the world beyond the gates of Marcellin.
|
A powerful theme for the day was what it means to be a “Saint in Sneakers” — how to walk with faith, humility, and purpose in everyday life. Whether they’re heading into study, work, or new adventures, our seniors were reminded that sainthood isn’t about perfection — it’s about love in action, leadership with heart, and staying true to their values in all spaces.
|
A special thank you goes to Hausia Manoa, Sr Salome, Cuan Pillay, Marina De Silva, and Jess Stenberg for their leadership and heart in facilitating the retreat. Their time, energy, and wisdom shaped what many of our students described as a memorable, meaningful, and uplifting experience. Their presence reminded our Year 13s of the power of faith, guidance, and authenticity — and we are deeply grateful for the impact they made.

We’re proud of our Year 13s and excited to see how they’ll carry the spirit of Marcellin into the world!

Year 11, 12, and 13 Literacy and Numeracy Digital Corequisites
In Week 5 of Term Two, all Year 11, 12, and 13 ākonga who did not gain the literacy and numeracy corequisites last year will sit the first digital corequisite attempt for 2025. Before this, another literacy and numeracy preparation day will be held on Rāapa/Wednesday, 21 Haratua/May. The confirmed days and times for these corequisites are:

Rātū/Tuesday, 27 Haratua/May: literacy (reading) periods one - three
|

Rāapa/Wednesday, 28 Haratua/May: literacy (writing) periods one - three
|

|
Rāpare/Thursday 29, Haratua/May: numeracy periods one - three
|
Ākonga will need to arrive at school on time and with a charged device for these days. There will be a second and final attempt in Term Three for ākonga to achieve the literacy and numeracy corequisites for 2025.
|
|
These corequisites are vital, as without them, ākonga will not be awarded Level One, Two, or Three NCEA.
|
|
|
|
|
Year 7, 8, & 9 Tasters
|
Year 7, 8, and 9 ākonga will complete their first taster subjects this week. Taster Rua/Two will begin the first week back of Term Two. Year 10 ākonga continue their Semester One Options until the last week of Term Two, when they will begin Semester Two Options.
|

|
|
Engagement Reports
|
Whānau of all Year 7 - 13 ākonga will receive engagement reports via email in Term Two, on Rāmere/Friday, Weeks 2, 4, 6, and 8.
|
|
|
|
Full Reports and Progress Hui
|
All ākonga will receive a full report in Week 7 of Term Two. This will be followed by two progress hui afternoons, on Rāapa/Wednesday, 18 Pipiri/June and Rāpare/Thursday, 19 Pipiri/June from 2 pm - 6.30 pm. Add these dates to your calendar now!

Kerikeri Music Trip
|
|
|
On Tuesday 1st April, some of our schools 3 jazz bands traveled to Kerikeri to perform as part of the Turner Centre Kerikeri Concert Series.
|
13 students and 3 staff had an enjoyable day performing to a full House at the Turner Centre. Some stand out performances as identified by the audiences belonged to Viliami Tuima on vocals, Noah Ah Sam on drums, Nathan Tamangaro who did a great job filling in on bass last minute, Zion Seniwaitui on vocals & our Jazz Unit brass section of Cecilia Koenig, Ayva Collins and Rachel Uy giving great performances.

All attended had a lovely day stopping to enjoy lunch at Paihia on the way home.

As summer wraps up, it’s time to gear up and kick off our winter sports season. We’ve received an amazing response from students eager to take part in Rugby, Netball, Basketball, and Football this year. Our committed Sport Staff, Ms. Stenberg and Mr. Mildon, will once again lead the Netball and Football programs. We’re excited to welcome back 2024 Alumni Sesilia, Vika, and Grace to support our junior netball program. Mr. Delana and Mr. Leavasā are taking charge of the league teams, with continued support from 2023 Marcellin Alumni Atelea Filo, who is making waves in his league career. We’re also thrilled to have 2024 Sports Captain Joseph Chavez return, this time as a technical advisor for our Basketball program. The Basketball boys are excited to welcome Ms. Ward, the Manager of the Year, as their new Senior Boys Manager, while Mr. Ratnum, in his first year at Marcellin, will be coaching the Junior Boys Basketball team in 2025.
|
It’s truly a blessing to see so many former students return to give back to the school, and we are incredibly grateful for their support.
|
Winter season training and trials have already begun, and coaches are hard at work selecting teams and preparing for the upcoming season. We’re still looking for any parents or volunteers interested in coaching or assisting in any way. If you’re able to help, please get in touch. Our Marcellin staff are fully committed to providing top-notch training sessions and coaching to help our ākonga succeed.
