Our celebrations for Cook Island language week began with a school assembly led by our Cook Island prefects and Mihi Whakatau traditional welcome for our new Tumuaki Tuarua Ms Sarah Cunningham and her whānau. It was wonderful to have our Marist College sisters join us with Tumuaki Mrs Raechelle Taulu for this special occasion. The Marist kapa haka group performed a powerful waiata tautoko, surrounding Ms Cunningham with aroha and grace to begin her new journey here at Marcellin College. We were also very humbled to have Tumuaki Ms Kiri Turketo from Sir Edmund Hillary Collegiate Senior School to support and join in the celebration.

Congratulations to our Under 19 Basketball champions who were undefeated and won the Central East, West competition! Congratulations also to Junior Cubs basketball team who won the Auckland B Championship competition. A heartfelt thank you to our passionate and committed Sport’s Director Mr David Aiolupotea, coaches and managers. Our Year 11 ākonga have begun the first of the new NCEA Level One Common Assessment Activities (CAA) with Physical Education leading the way. CAAs are assessments developed and marked by external educators from NZQA which are completed by Year 11 ākonga all over the nation. It is imperative that ākonga attend school everyday to prepare for these and ask questions to achieve their personal excellence. You can read more about the CAAs and the dates of the assessments in the section below.

Next week we celebrate the Feast of the Assumption of Mary and Sacramental Mass with Bishop Steve where we will witness as a faith community, our ākonga receiving the sacraments of initiation (Baptism, Confirmation and Communion). Meitaki Ma’ata / thank you very much to Ms. Rebecca Sutton and Seminarian Ryan Sy. Please keep in your prayer our ākonga in the Sacaremental Programme and their whānau.
|
May we continue to be inspired by Mary’s discipleship and humble service of God and his son Jesus, so that we too might dedicate our own lives to the service of God, following the examples of Mary and Marcellin.

Sacramental Programme Students trip
On Thursday 8th August 12 ākonga from the sacramental program along with Mr Franswah, Br Ryan Sy and I went to St Patrick's Cathedral in the city. The ākonga received the sacrament of reconciliation for the first time and attended mass at the Cathedral. Afterwards we had lunch and a talk by Br Ryan and Mr Franswah about the Eucharist. It was a wonderful and spirit-filled day for both ākonga and kaiako, and may we all pray for them as they prepare to be received into the church at mass on the feast of the assumption.

Catholic Caring Foundation - Annual Caring Mass
Congratulations to Angelie Perillo, Romun Lemoe-Hohepa, Margaret Finefeuiaki and Sophie Kautai, the 2024 Marcellin College recipients of the Catholic Caring Foundation Awards at the annual Caring Mass held at Christ the King in Owairaka on Rāapa / Wednesday 7 August.

They were amongst other young Catholic rangatahi and community leaders who were recognised for their care and service, particularly for those less fortunate. We are grateful the ongoing financial support received each year from the Catholic Caring Foundation which goes towards supporting the pastoral needs of our ākonga.
|

Marcellin Spirit Awards
At Marcellin College we use the name ‘Marcellin Spirit’ for Positive Behaviour for Learning. Marcellin Spirit teaches positive behaviour for learning by teaching expectations to all ākonga. We do this via specific Marcellin Spirit lessons, as well as by rewarding expected behaviours. We link our expected behaviours to the Marist Pillars. Our free and frequent reward system is whānau points, which ākonga can track using the MyMahi platform.
Marcellin Spirit certificates are awarded to the ākonga with the most Whānau points each week of the term. Congratulations to the following recipients for Week 2 of Term Three:

Education Review Office | Te Tari Arotake Mātauranga: Marcellin College Profile Report
Te Ara Huarau is the evaluation approach that the Education Review Office (ERO) is using in our school. This is a developmental approach to evaluation where ERO and our school work together over time rather than one off review that happened previously. Te Ara Huarau is used in most English-medium state and state-integrated schools.
|
ERO maintains a regular review programme to evaluate and report on the education and care of young people in the schools. Our school worked alongside ERO to write our Profile Report. This type of report will only happen once as part of our initial engagement with Te Ara Huarau. The profile report reflects our strategic goals and a shared evaluation focus on one or more areas that are important to us as we work together to improve outcomes for all our learners. ERO, like us, has a strong focus on equity and excellence. Future reporting will show our progress and achievement towards meeting the goals we have set. Public reports like the Profile Report are published on ERO’s website.

A Board Assurance Report that shows how we are meeting regulatory and legislative Requirements has also been published.

Literacy and Numeracy Digital Corequisites
This term the second attempt for literacy and numeracy digital corequisites take place. Any Year 11 ākonga who did not gain the literacy and numeracy corequisites either last year or in Term Two of this year will sit these corequisites, as well as all Year 10 ākonga (unless whānau opt-out, as per letters emailed home at the start of this term) on:

Rāhina/Monday 9 Mahuru/September: literacy (reading) periods one and two
|

Rātū/Tuesday 10Mahuru/September: literacy (writing) periods one and two
|

Rāapa/Wednesday 11 Mahuru/September: numeracy periods one and two
|
Ākonga will need to arrive at school on time and with a charged device for these days.
|
|
These corequisites are vital, as without them ākonga will not be awarded Level One, Two, or Three NCEA.
|
Specific logistics will be emailed to all ākonga and whānau involved closer to the time.
|
|
There is a preparation rā/day that will be held on Rāmere/Friday 30 Hereturikōkā/August, where ākonga will spend periods 1, 2, and 3 preparing for literacy and periods 4 and 5 preparing for numeracy.
|
|
|
|
|
Year 11 Assessments
This term is a very busy term for Year 11 ākonga, with final internal assessments due, literacy and numeracy corequisites, the new CAA (Common Assessment Tasks), as well as senior practice exams.
|
|

Senior Practice Exams
Our NCEA Practice Examinations will be held in week 10 of Term 3. This examination will serve as a crucial component of our learning process and the results could be used as a Derived Grade if your child is absent for valid reasons in the November NCEA Examinations (NZQA - Derived Grades).

Science Faculty
Introducing Our New Lab Technician: Renée Arrasco-Ward
|
We are thrilled to welcome Renée as our new Laboratory Technician in the Science Faculty. Renée comes to us fresh from the University of Auckland where she has recently completed her Masters of Science (Speech Science). She brings background experience in laboratory work and dedication to our team, ensuring that our science labs run smoothly and safely.
|
As Lab Technician, Renée’s role includes preparing chemicals and equipment for experiments and demonstrations, ensuring our store rooms and labs are clean, safe and orderly and handling laboratory equipment and biological materials with care.
|
In addition to these tasks, Renee will oversee the storage, control, and maintenance of our lab equipment as well as the management and safe disposal of laboratory waste such as dissection materials. She will also conduct annual stocktakes and handle deliveries of new stock.
|
|
We are excited to have Renée on board and are already impressed with her enthusiasm and commitment to the faculty and school.
|

International Students

Japanese International Students (Auckland Zoo Trip)
|
|
|
Our Japanese International students from Dokkyo High School enjoyed their recent trip to Auckland Zoo. There were murmurs of surprise as they spotted zebra, giraffes, nyalas, baboons, a seal, ostrich, otters, orangutans, sleeping cheetahs and lions. Our Dokkyo High School students also walked through a tropical rainforest. The heat was not a popular option and left some students with foggy reading glasses. They were happy to see the end of this trail. But there was one friendly face they wanted to see, a kiwi. Although difficult to spot, they were fortunate enough to take pictures of a wandering kiwi. There were smiles all around. Whakawhetai to Mr. Nakaora and Mrs. D'Souza for coordinating this trip.

Pathways-Ara
|
|
|
|
Our annual careers expo is coming up on the 22nd August - Students will have the opportunity to connect with professionals from various industries and learn about different career paths. This is a great chance for students to ask questions, network, and gain valuable insights into potential career choices.
|
This term we will be available to students after school in the Library on a Thursday afternoon. We can cover topics such as resume building, interview skills, and job search strategies. We will also be available for help with scholarship applications and university admissions.
|
Miss Turnbull will be available to meet with students individually to discuss their interests, goals, and potential career pathways. Whether students are considering further study, an apprenticeship, or entering the workforce directly, she is here to provide guidance and support along with Mr D’Souza who is also available by appointment. We encourage students to explore a range of pathways and consider their interests, strengths, and values when making decisions about their future.
|
Opportunities for students:
For 2025, we have a number of work experience/Gateway placements available for students who are interested in gaining hands-on experience in a particular industry. This is a fantastic opportunity for students to explore a potential career path, build their skills, and make valuable connections in the field. As well as gaining some credits. If students in years 10-12 are interested then shortly we will open up registrations and then Miss Turnbull will hold interviews towards the end of Term 3 or 4.
|
This week we attended the ShadowTech event where a bunch of female Year 11 and 12 students visited the Tech company Salesforce and learnt about what it would be like to join the tech industry and the different strengths and skills that will be needed in an ever changing environment.

|
What a start to the term! Some silverware was added to the cabinet by our amazing basketball teams. Junior Boys Basketball who have gone undefeated throughout the season winning the Auckland B grade championship. They were also coached by a very committed and driven sports prefect, Joseph Chavez. Coach Joseph was also part of our successful Under 19’s Basketball team who also won their grade with an impressive performance against Michael Park. This is a huge milestone for Marcellin moving forward, we are excited to see what 2025 brings.
|
Across other sports, we are finally into the Badminton season with both our Senior Boys and Girls winning their first two rounds and remain at the top of the table. Football picking up crucial points in the weekend as they push to be seeded at the top by September. Netball, coached by Miss. Jess Stenberg and Ms. Cushla Tokoma look to continue a strong start to the season. With a couple games not going their way with disappointing results it has worked wonders with the team now putting in the effort to end their season on a high. Rugby has gained many interest with numbers increasing each week. Our 1stXV pulled off their performance of the season against a well drilled and physical De La Salle side. The Under 15’s are growing in numbers and we look to build a strong squad as the season progresses.

We thank all parents, family and friends who have been nothing short of amazing with the continuous support and encouragement across all sport teams. We also thank our amazing coaches and managers who continue to sacrifice their time to nurture the future of our athletes.
