We were welcomed by the beautiful pink and purple magnolia flowers next to the statue of St. Marcellin Champagnat at the front of the school, ushering in a new, bright, and colourful term for all of us.
|

Since the last newsletter, the annual senior Ball has been held at the Ellerslie Convention Centre, and our ākonga have been active in the last of the winter sports training and made history for our kura by winning Gold at the World Choir Games festival.
|
I am pleased to welcome our new Tumuaki Tuarua / Deputy Principal Sarah Cunningham this term. Her extensive service and leadership experiences in Catholic and state secondary schools will strengthen our learning community to ‘Transform lives through Faith, Knowledge and Education founded on Marist Traditions’.
|
Planning for 2025 is underway which includes developing next year’s Annual Implementation plan, and 2025 course selection for returning ākonga. Important assessments and revision lessons are taking place this term for all ākonga so they must be at school every day, on time with the right uniform and equipment to learn. Look out for our ‘Faculty Features’ in our newsletters and social media sites to learn more about the learning programmes offered at Marcellin College. Take the time to kōrero / talanoa with your tamariki about their career aspirations in preparation for the Careers Expo and course selection in Week Five this term.

Welcome back to school for Term 3! We hope you enjoyed the holiday break and that students are refreshed and ready. Our work on the Board has been focused on monitoring student attendance, tracking student achievement levels, and ensuring a safe environment for quality teaching and learning experiences. The Board is passionate about providing the necessary support for our students to succeed and "Transform lives through faith, knowledge and education founded on Marist Traditions."

I am absolutely delighted to be joining the Marcellin College aiga and I am looking forward to meeting you this term. My roots are in the Hokianga and I grew up in Whangārei where I attended Pompallier College. My teaching experience in Tāmaki Makaurau includes Tangaroa College, McAuley High School, James Cook High School Teen Parent Unit and most recently Marist College. I am keen to get to know you all and excited to begin working alongside you in our beautiful school.

As we come together for a new term we are thankful and grateful to God for blessing us with life, family, opportunities & time this far. Our Marcellin whānau have already started building their Faith journeys again as we prepare for some exciting events. One in particular is our full school Mass happening in Week 4 of our school Term.
|
This upcoming Mass will be a momentous occasion, as we come together to celebrate the Assumption of Mary, a significant feast in the Catholic Church honoring the Virgin Mary's ascension into Heaven. This special Mass will also be particularly meaningful for our community as we witness and support the candidates who will be receiving their sacraments. Their journey of faith and commitment to the Church is a source of inspiration and joy for us all.

We look forward to gathering as one in prayer and unity, embracing the grace and blessings of this sacred celebration.

Marcellin Spirit Awards
At Marcellin College we use the name ‘Marcellin Spirit’ for Positive Behaviour for Learning. Marcellin Spirit teaches positive behaviour for learning by teaching expectations to all ākonga. We do this via specific Marcellin Spirit lessons, as well as by rewarding expected behaviours. We link our expected behaviours to the Marist Pillars. Our free and frequent reward system is whānau points, which ākonga can track using the MyMahi platform.
Marcellin Spirit certificates are awarded to the ākonga with the most Whānau points each week of the term. Congratulations to the following recipients for Week 1 Term Three:

World Choir Games
In the recent holidays - 37 members of our School Choir - The Marcellin College Voices competed in the World Choir Games. They worked hard during the holidays to prepare for the Festival which brought together 250 plus choirs from 42 countries around the World to New Zealand. They also hosted the World Champion Choir "Voices of Unity" from the USA at the school as an extra connection and exchange organised by their Director Dr O Ah Sam. They shared a meal together, performed for each other, played some games and talked about life in Music. The students did a great job greatly improving on their performance at the recent Big Sing and were Awarded a GOLD Medal at the World Choir Games 2024.

Congratulations to them and thank you to their parents / families for their support as well as the staff who helped Mr Ah Sam with supervision and driving the choir around during the week.

On Friday 19th July we had a lovely evening exchange with the world champion choir "Voices of Unity" from the USA, sharing music, stories, laughter, games and performances.

Literacy and Numeracy Digital Corequisites
This term the second attempt for literacy and numeracy digital corequisites take place. Any Year 11 ākonga who did not gain the literacy and numeracy corequisites either last year or in Term Two of this year will sit these corequisites, as well as all Year 10 ākonga (unless whānau opt-out, as per letters emailed home at the start of this term) on:

Rāhina/Monday 9 Mahuru/September: literacy (reading) periods one and two

Rātū/Tuesday 10Mahuru/September: literacy (writing) periods one and two

Ākonga will need to arrive at school on time and with a charged device for these days.
|
|
These corequisites are vital, as without them ākonga will not be awarded Level One, Two, or Three NCEA.
|
Specific logistics will be emailed to all ākonga and whānau involved closer to the time.
|
|
There is a preparation rā/day that will be held on Rāmere/Friday 30 Hereturikōkā/August, where ākonga will spend periods 1, 2, and 3 preparing for literacy and periods 4 and 5 preparing for numeracy.
|
|
|
|
|
Year 11 Assessments
This term is a very busy term for Yr 11 ākonga, with final internal assessments due, literacy and numeracy corequisites, the new CAA (Common Assessment Tasks), as well as senior practice exams.
|

Year 11 Textile and Fashion
|
The recent Year 11 Fashion and Textiles assessment involved ākonga exploring and experimenting with recycling materials gathered from the resource center to create cultural accessories. While maintaining cultural traditions and styles, ākonga were required to replicate an accessory suitable for an event.
|
|
Vincent O. (Year 13) used present ribbon, crepe paper, aluminum foil oven trays, Pasikifa patterned fabric, and elastic to create a Tongan Kiekie in combination with a Samoan Ulu Nifo.
|
|
|
|
Veralinna L. (Year 11) used feathers, mirrors, shells, and her grandmother's tapa cloth to craft a stunning Samoan Tuiga.
|
|
|
|
Juvel J. (Year 11) utilized black and white webbing, white padded vinyl, video tape, and coffee pods to design a Tongan Kiekie.
|
|
|
|
Giselle F. (Year 11) employed gold coin wrappers, fabric ribbon, beads, rhinestones, cardboard, and handmade fabric feathers to create a unique Filipino Sarimanok Headdress.
|
|
|
|
The Year 11 Fashion and Textiles class achieved outstanding results, demonstrating their creativity and respect for cultural traditions.
|
|
|
|
Molly, Tomislav, and Zane from Āwhina Ako tie-dyed and sewed material strips and created raffia kiekie flowers to replicate a Tongan kiekie design.
|
|
|

Commerce/Business Studies Faculty
|
Deloitte Growth Celebration
|
The Year 10 Business Studies class rose to the challenges presented by the Deloitte Grow Programme which finished off with a ‘Celebration’ at Deloitte’s brand new headquarters at Queen Street, Auckland CBD. After a period of intense mentoring by Deloitte coaches the students rolled up their sleeves to try their hand at running their little businesses. The challenges were intensified by the competition between the different teams as they jostled to get a bigger slice of the student market when selling their products. Ethnic foods such as chocolate filled panikeke were introduced and became a big seller. Other foods such as Otai, various Filipino delicacies and the more traditional home-baked cookies and ice creams also carved out a slice of the market. The students involved relished the success of their business ventures and showcased their results during their presentations at the Deloitte headquarters. By the end of the programme the teams had acquired valuable entrepreneurial skills, the importance of team-work and problem-solving during their journey.

We are grateful to Ms Doray and her team of mentors from Deloitte, Ms Francic our student teacher from AUT and Ms Macam for their efforts in running this successful programme.

Commerce Careers and Pathways
Studying Commerce subjects enables students to develop business related skills which lead to a wide range of careers and provides opportunities to run your own business. Students can major in areas they are most interested in and follow their ambitions after graduating.
|
Possible career pathways include becoming a Chartered Accountant, having accounting pathways in central and local government and roles as auditors, finance brokers, bankers and tax consultants. Graduates may also run their own businesses and with their highly recognised qualifications, be able to work in many different parts of the world.
|
At Marcellin students begin their Commerce journey with a taster at Y9, a semester of Business Studies at Y10 and full year courses at Y11, Y12 and Y13. Students then enter a university to study for their Commerce degree.

English Faculty

Year 9 English (9 Ruru) used descriptive language features to write some evocative poetry during our Writing Unit, last term as can be seen in the poems featured here.
|
|
|
|
|
Year 7 English (7 Tahi ) learnt how to create static images which convey layers of meaning about a topic. After studying a novel in class, The Silver Sword, they designed a cover page for that novel. Here are some examples of the static images they produced.

Social Sciences Faculty
Social Sciences is all about field trips and getting out into the community, and boy have we been doing that!
|
At the start of the year our Year 7 students spent the day at the Auckland Museum to explore Auckland’s history and look at a range of artefacts.
|
As has become tradition, a small group of Year 13 students represented Marcellin College at our local ANZAC day services, and as always they did us proud.
|
We also sent a group of Year 12 and Year 13 students to represent the school at the Model United Nations Assembly at Rosmini College. Over 100 teams participated. Our Year 12 team consisted of Eric Mapa, Augustine Palelei, Eseta Paunga and Uaealesi Timoteo who represented Cyprus. Our Year 13 team consisted of Tyler Oroanu, Jacinta Taufao and Temaleti Tupou who represented Canada. Both teams represented their countries authentically, with well-researched and well-crafted speeches.

The Year 10, 12 and 13 Media Studies students have been working hard on their short film projects and have been developing their directorial, acting, camera and editing skills.
|
|
Next week, our Year 12 and 13 Geography students will be getting out into the real-world to do some hands-on learning about society and the environment. The Year 12 students will travel to various town centres to research land use. Our Year 13 students will investigate coastal processes and compare the contrasting beach profiles.

Reminder: Safety and behaviour expectations in Public
A timely reminder that when your tamariki / child(ren) are wearing the Marcellin College uniform, it must be worn neatly and correctly at all times to demonstrate that they are well disciplined, showing pride for themselves, and our kura / school.
|
When they are in school uniform, at school or in the public, they must always behave in a manner that brings honour to their whānau and our kura/school, and not behave in a manner which brings their whānau and our kura into disrepute or disgrace.
|
Our Senior Leadership team has received notification that some of our ākonga in public transport and bus/train depots/stops have not been demonstrating the Marist Pillars and pride of our kura. Please continue to remind your tamariki of our Marcellin Way and expected behaviours. It is important our ākonga be alert and aware of what is happening around them (situational awareness) when travelling to and from school with the increased assaults and unwanted behaviour in buses and bus stops.
|
It is important that your tamariki remain at school when they arrive in the morning, and not walk to the local shops. Kaiārahi have been following up on attendance and punctuality, and will be contacting home as per our Pastoral procedures.
|
If your tamariki has a concern, please encourage them to talk to you, a member of the Senior Leadership Team, or any staff member at school.

Teens and their Screens
Teens are drawn to their screens like moths to a flame. They demand ever more screen-time telling us it “makes them happy” but their actions and behaviours are telling us the opposite. More teens now than ever before struggle with anxiety, depression, suicidality and self-harm and recent research shows there is a direct link between the time teens spend on their screens and plunging adolescent mental health.
|
If you want to learn how help your teen side-step the world of sexting, cyberbullying and gaming addiction come along to hear Heartsync parent consultant, Adrienne Wood, speak on the importance of helping rangatahi manage their digital world.
|
Come with your questions, your thoughts and your (well founded) fears. Come prepared to have a bit of fun too and to learn about screens together with other parents of teens. Make a date night out of it! Bring your partner, your friends and your phones to get your heads around digital safety together.

It is the busy end of the winter season. Students return from their holidays hoping to build off the momentum gained in Term Two. Marcellin College Sport has witnessed record-breaking scores and nail-biting games. So far this season, five teams remain undefeated: U19s and Junior Boys Basketball, 1st XV Rugby, Netball Gold, and Junior Netball. All teams showing no signs of complacency, ready to push for finals. Badminton will begin on Monday with both girls and boys travelling to Epsom Girls or Gillies Ave for their games.
|
Our Netball Gold (Premiers) make a statement each week with great results. They’re also gearing up for the Upper North Island Secondary Schools (UNISS) competition which will be held at Te Pai Netball Centre on the 2nd- 6th of September. A record of 128 high schools have also entered. Meanwhile, our Netball Cubs have shown promising signs for the future and remain unbeaten with star player Mary Finauvala selected to participate in the UNISS squad.
|
Basketball continues to strengthen as the season progresses, Under 19 Boys and Girls battling it out in the Top 5 of their grades pushing for a spot in the finals. The football teams have a huge boost with both Senior and Junior Team hosting their remaining 5 games and look to end their season on a high. Rugby teams are also looking at being in contention for finals footy with our 1stXV remaining unbeaten this season and our under 15 boys fighting to keep their season alive.

We thank our amazing coaches and managers who continue to sacrifice their time to nurture the future of our athletes. Thank you to our loyal supporters who turn up weekly in this cold weather to support our Marcellin athletes.

About Auckland All Stars: Our club is committed to fostering the growth of basketball in Auckland while providing comprehensive skill development for players of all levels.
