Last week was a joyous time for our school community with a beautiful Thanksgiving Mass and a celebratory Senior Prizegiving - click on this link to see the photos (https://www.bcphotography.co.nz/marcellincollegeseniorprizegiving2024). Whakamihi to all our award recipients for their Aroha ki te Mahi. Whakamihi to Tyler Oroanu, who was awarded the most prestigious school award for the top academic ākonga of the Year 13, Dux, and to Mark Daria who was awarded second place academic ākonga in Year 13, the Timoteo Award for Proxime Accessit to Dux. Whakamihi to the following ākonga who were awarded scholarships in 2025:

Our honoured guest speaker for the Senior Prizegiving, Dr Sabrina Kado is an ex-ākonga of Marcellin College, class of 2011 and completed the Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery. She shared her educational journey and what it meant for her to SEEK THE BEST through small but significant behavioural changes to develop good habits at Marcellin College. Sabrina referenced ‘Atomic Habits’ by James Clear - highly recommended holiday reading for all!

NCEA exams are well underway, ngā mihi kia koe / thank you for your ongoing support, and to our junior school for being respectful and quiet around the school grounds during exam times. Whānau of Years 11 to 13 ākonga, please keep encouraging, supporting and motivating your tamariki to SEEK THE BEST in this important period by revising regularly and turning up to all their exams.
|
Our international ākonga from South Korea enjoyed their time in the classroom and field trip to Maungakiekie. Ngā mihi kia koutou to the buddies for showing them the Marcellin Way.
|
We look forward to meeting our new ākonga and their whānau for 2025 at our Whānau Orientation evening later this month, if you have a child yet to enrol for 2025 then please submit an online application soon before the ‘New Whānau Evening’ and ‘New Ākonga Testing’ events in two weeks. A letter will be sent to all whānau with more details and reminders of the new school year dates.
|
There is still much to be done this term and I urge you to continue checking in and encouraging your tamariki to attend school regularly and seek help when things are getting tough. Research has shown the critical link between regular academic achievement and attendance, as well as overall hauora. Every day matters and your involvement is key to ensuring their success.
|

Here, you will learn what makes Marcellin College a Christ-centred, engaging, whānau-oriented school and meet the dedicated team of kaimahi/staff. There will be an opportunity for you to ask questions and hear the experiences of our ākonga / students.

Attendance Dues 2024:
|
The attendance dues for 2024 should now be fully paid. A reminder that Attendance Dues are a compulsory payment under the terms of the Education and Training Act 2020, and a condition of enrolment at a Catholic school. Attendance Dues are charged for all ākonga who attend Catholic Schools in New Zealand. It is a legal charge and not a donation; attendance dues are not tax deductible.
|
Financial assistance is available to assist families who may need financial support with the payment of Attendance Dues for preference students attending Catholic schools in Auckland Diocese, both primary and secondary. Please email Executive Officer Mrs Tiffany Wood (accounts@marcellin.school.nz)

Marcellin Spirit Awards
At Marcellin College we use the name ‘Marcellin Spirit’ for Positive Behaviour for Learning. Marcellin Spirit teaches positive behaviour for learning by teaching expectations to all ākonga. We do this via specific Marcellin Spirit lessons, as well as by rewarding expected behaviours. We link our expected behaviours to the Marist Pillars. Our free and frequent reward system is whānau points, which ākonga can track using the MyMahi platform.

Taster Summary Reports
|
Whānau of all Year 7, 8, & 9 ākonga will receive a Taster Summary Report via email this Rāhina/Monday 11 Whringa-ā-rangi/November, to help ākonga choose their options (Year 10) for 2025. These taster and option selections open on Rāhina/Monday 11 Whringa-ā-rangi/November, and close on Rāmere/Friday 22 Whiringa-ā-rangi/November. Option booklets will be emailed to all ākonga and whānau on Rāhina/Monday, with tasters/options forms to be completed on paper. Ākonga will receive their taster/option forms in class next week.

Digital Literacy and Numeracy Corequisite Results
|
Results from the Mahuru/September digital literacy corequisite assessments will be made available on 5 Haikhea/December. Ākonga will need to log into their NZQA account to view these results: NZQA - Ākonga Login Steps.

|

Marcellin Fun Week
Our Big Day Out events will take place in week 8 with activities at Jellicoe pools and Maungakiekie/One Tree Hill to attend a Stardome session. These also include engaging in various sporting activities.
|
To cover the costs of these outings, we are asking that all ākonga pay $12 to SSC by December 2nd.
|
|
We will be walking from Marcellin College at 9am to both locations and will be returning to school before the end-of-day bell at 3:15pm. Ākonga can come to school in mufti and will need to bring a packed morning tea, lunch and a water bottle. For the pools, proper swimwear such as togs, rash tops and shorts are required to swim on the day as t-shirts are not allowed in the pool.

The Year 7 - 10 Performing Arts Show
|
The Year 7-10 Performing Arts Show takes place on Monday 25th and Tuesday 26th of November featuring dance, drama and musical acts. Tickets are $2 each and are available from Student Services. Come and witness the gifts and talents our amazing ākonga have been blessed with!

Sports
|
|
|
As we enter the final term of the year, it's time to reflect on the achievements of 2024 and celebrate the athletes who have demonstrated exceptional dedication and passion. The Senior Sports Prize Giving saw fierce competition for most awards, with one exception—the highest honour in Sport. Mary-Jane Taito has been a standout athlete at Marcellin, earning recognition for her unwavering commitment to Rugby League. She was named captain of the New Zealand Schools under-18 squad and secured a place with the NRLW Bulldogs for the next five years.
|
Marshall Rekareka was named Sportsman of the Year, while Sesilia Havili dominated the female category, winning Sportswoman of the Year. Mr. Mildon earned Coach of the Year in a tightly contested field, reflecting the caliber of coaching talent Marcellin has been fortunate to have this year. The Senior Boys Basketball team set a high standard throughout the season and were named Team of the Year.
|
Term 4 has also been a busy time for our Junior athletes. Both the boys’ and girls’ volleyball teams have shown impressive growth, with the Junior Girls Volleyball team losing only one game to date. The Junior Boys Volleyball team, coached by former student Elijah Malaitai, has shown great potential and will compete in next week's Auckland Championships, where they will face the best teams from across the region.
|
This week, we also competed in the Auckland Southern/Eastern Junior Tag Tournament at Ngāti Ōtara. Our girls’ tag team was a standout surprise, winning all five of their games. Unfortunately, due to Marcellin’s central location, they were ineligible for the Top 8, but that didn't dampen their spirits. The Boys’ Tag team also performed well in a competitive pool, with Allan Tuimoala showing great leadership and skill, quickly becoming a crowd favourite.
|
Looking ahead, the Middle School Sports Prize Giving is shaping up to be a highly competitive event, with many deserving athletes to recognise.

Fill The Blues Bus – Let’s Help Families in Need This Christmas
This Christmas season, our kura/school is excited to get involved with the Fill The Blues Bus campaign, We’re helping to collect non-perishable food items to support families in need across our region.
|
Starting Monday, 4th November, we’ll be collecting non-perishable food at school right through until Wednesday, 4th December. All the food will be donated to some amazing charities, including The Village Community Trust, South Seas, and Whakaora Kai.
|
If you’re keen to help, please start gathering food items and bring them to school between 4th November and 4th December. Together, we can make a difference for families in need this Christmas.
