|
This week’s festivities and celebrations were a great way to end the final week as a full school! This included the DOX Shield, TechArt showcase and this afternoon’s annual Marcellin Fusion Fest. The cultural performances and food stalls demonstrated the strong ‘Wairua e te Whānau / Family Spirit’ of our kura. My heartfelt thanks to Ms Laura Geaney, Ms Vicky Goodier and the beautiful St Therese ākonga and Mr James Cullen and his team from Marist Alternative Education who joined us for this celebration.
|
Next week, we will continue our celebrations by acknowledging and thanking our Year 13 ākonga and their whānau for their years of service here at Marcellin College. We will say a final blessing for them during the Thanksgiving Mass next Rāapa / Wednesday 30th Whiringaānuku / October so they may continue to be filled with God’s light of love, hope and peace to make Jesus Christ known and loved as they move onto the next stage of their lives. At the Leaver’s assembly, our Year 13 ākonga will have a final chance to address the school.

I would like to take this opportunity to humbly acknowledge our Prefect team this year who have demonstrated servant leadership and the Marist Pillar of 2024, Aroha ki te Mahi / Love of Work. Ngā mihi kia koutou for your commitment to living the Gospel of Christ, strong and gentle as our Good Mother Mary was, and to see and act upon the need for loving service in our world.

A timely reminder to your tamariki / child(ren) to stay alert and aware of their surroundings (situational awareness) when travelling to and from school, given the rise in assaults and undesirable behaviour on public transport and in public spaces including the Warehouse and bus depots. Auckland Transport (AT) has teamed up with Crime Stoppers to make our public transport safer for all. AT is encouraging customers to report incidents of crime, and anti-social behaviour via text, call or email*. It's anonymous, easy to do and will contribute to a safer journey for everyone on our transport network. If your tamariki has a concern, please encourage them to talk to you, a member of the Senior Leadership Team, or one of their kaiako.

Next week also marks the start of Whiringaārangi / November and with it comes the feast of All Saints Day followed by All Souls day. Whiringaārangi / November in the Catholic church is dedicated to remembering our whānau members who have gone before us. All Saints Day, on Whiringaārangi / November 1 is a day set aside to honour church members believed to have gone to heaven.
|
Please also keep all our ākonga in your prayers during Whiringaārangi / November: those preparing for examinations, those starting the next chapter of their lives and especially those who are finding life stressful and challenging at present.
|

Special Character
|
|
|
This term, our school community has once again demonstrated the true spirit of service through the success of several initiatives that reflect our Marist values of humility and love of work. Our Breakfast Club started up this week which was a hit! This initiative not only meets a practical need but also teaches our ākonga the importance of serving others quietly and humbly, just as Christ served those around Him.
|
Additionally, the La Valla Service Projects have been a wonderful expression of faith in action. These projects remind us all that true leadership is rooted in humility and a willingness to serve others, reflecting the heart of our special character.
|
We are also preparing for a very special occasion next week. On Wednesday, 30th October, we will gather as a school community for the School Leavers’ Mass. This Mass is a significant moment as we celebrate and give thanks for the journey of our senior students who are about to embark on the next chapter of their lives. The theme for our upcoming Mass is "For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do".

|
We warmly invite all whānau to join us for this important celebration, as we come together in faith and gratitude. Let us support our school leavers as they prepare to go out into the world, grounded in the teachings of Christ, ready to serve and lead with integrity and compassion.

On Thursday 17 October we hosted the Champagnat Marist combined boards gathering for Sacred Heart College and St Paul's College.

The keynote speaker for the night was Dr Kevin Shore from the New Zealand Catholic Education Office.

Celebrating Ākonga Success
|

Marcellin Spirit Awards
At Marcellin College we use the name ‘Marcellin Spirit’ for Positive Behaviour for Learning. Marcellin Spirit teaches positive behaviour for learning by teaching expectations to all ākonga. We do this via specific Marcellin Spirit lessons, as well as by rewarding expected behaviours. We link our expected behaviours to the Marist Pillars. Our free and frequent reward system is whānau points, which ākonga can track using the MyMahi platform.
Marcellin Spirit certificates are awarded to the ākonga with the most Whānau points each week of the term. Congratulations to the following recipients for Week 1 & 2 of Term Three:

Senior NCEA Summary Reports
|
There will be one final report emailed home to all Yr 11, 12 & 13 whānau on Rāmere/Friday 1 Whiringa-ā-nuku/November which will be an NCEA summary report. This will show all achievement for the year and practice exam results (used for NZQA - Derived Grades if needed). The report will also show whether ākonga have gained their NCEA level already and how many remaining credits there are available in the external assessment (exams).

Digital Literacy and Numeracy Corequisite Results
|
Results from the Mahuru/September digital literacy corequisite assessments will be made available on 5 Haikhea/December. Ākonga will need to log into their NZQA account to view these results: NZQA - Ākonga Login Steps.

NZQA Exams
|
External exams begin on 5 Whirinag-ā-rangi/November and run until 29 Whirinag-ā-rangi/November. All Year 11, 12 & 13 ākonga attended an NZQA Exam assembly earlier this week. NCEA Achievement Information
|
As Year 11 and 12 ākonga prepare to advance to Year 12 and 13, they must do so with the necessary skills to succeed at these levels. With NCEA now requiring both Literacy and Numeracy standards to be met before qualification, the pathway is no longer straightforward. In light of this, ākonga must achieve a minimum of 40 credits to progress to the next year level. The upcoming reports will provide a clear overview of how many credits ākonga have earned and how many are still needed and available. Attendance at and success in external exams will be crucial to ensure ākonga meet the required credit threshold.

Marcellin College - "Fusion Fest"
|
On Friday 25th October we came together to celebrate culture and diversity at "Fusion Fest", our cultural festival! The whānau spirit was widely felt and all who attended enjoyed the wonderful performances and food stalls on offer. A big thank you to the Marcellin community for their support, the stallholders and the performers (from St Therese School and Marcellin College) for making the festival a true celebration, and to everyone behind the scenes for their mahi. This collective effort made the festival a true success!

Term 4 has kicked off just like the previous terms this year—quick and eventful. The Year 7 and 8 Boys and Girls Basketball teams competed in the Central Zone competition at EventFinda Stadium, with the Boys finishing 4th and the Girls placing 8th—great efforts all around!
|
The DOX Shield returned this year, showcasing impressive skills and talent. The Year 13 team, led by Fa’e Takai, proved to be formidable, while the spirited Year 12 team, captained by Paul Sipapa Vaelua, gave their all but ultimately fell short.
|
As we approach the end of the year, we’re excited about our Junior Boys and Girls Volleyball teams, who are showing promising potential.
|
The year is shaping up to be a good finish.
