Message from the Tumuaki/Principal -
Ms. Maria Prescott
|
|
|
|
Ake, ake, ake! The theme of Te Wiki o te reo Māori - a forever language, aligns deeply with the Marist Pillar of Aroha ki te Mahi which is about resilience, endurance, grit and adaptability - key personal characteristics needed for our ākonga to SEEK the Best and to be the BEST.
|
Our Māori Kaitātaki and prefects have served as tuakana (mentors) to their teina (younger siblings) in our kura, leading school assemblies and organising activities such as making poi. Ngā mihi kia koe, Te Ariki Te Puni, who was our guest speaker at the full school assembly. Te Ariki Te Puni, who hails from various iwi across Te Ika-a-Māui, is the Head of Kaupapa Māori at Education Perfect, our learning platform. He shared his educational and life journey, leading to success in rugby, education, and business, encouraging everyone to be resilient, and adaptable, and to learn from the opportunities life presents.

Ngā mihi kia koe Malachi Malaitai, our dedicated Ākonga Board representative who served our learning community with passion and pride! The voting papers and candidate statements have been emailed to all years 9 to 13 ākonga and they must vote for the best person who will represent them.
|
Whakamihi / congratulations to Temaleti Tupou, winner of the Stand Up, Stand Out solo vocal, our Year 10 and some of our senior ākonga who sat the NCEA Literacy and Numeracy corequisites and to our Marcellin whānau who took part in the Social Justice activities which you will read about in this newsletter.
|
Our thoughts and prayers are now with the seniors who are preparing for the NCEA Senior Practice examinations next week. We as a whānau and kaimahi / staff can support our rangatahi to ‘Seek the Best’ in these assessments by demonstrating Aroha ki te Mahi, like encouraging a positive ‘can do’ attitude, checking in and providing emotional support, and making sure they communicate with their kaiako when they have questions. There is important information regarding the strict conditions for the practice examinations, and we appreciate your support in reviewing these with your tamariki so they understand what is expected of them.
|
As we head into the final week of the term, continue to encourage your tamariki/child(ren) to come to school every day, overall attendance rates this term have been 82% and there is a lot of room for improvement. Attending school every day is strongly linked to successful educational outcomes so please continue to encourage your tamariki/child(ren) to come to school.
|
Finally, the attendance dues for Term Three should now be fully paid. A reminder that Attendance Dues are a compulsory payment under the terms of the Education and Training Act 2020, and a condition of enrolment at a Catholic school. Attendance Dues are charged for all ākonga who attend Catholic Schools in New Zealand. It is a legal charge and not a donation; attendance dues are not tax deductible.
|
Financial assistance is available to assist families who may need financial support with the payment of Attendance Dues for preference students attending Catholic schools in Auckland Diocese, both primary and secondary.
|
We pray for our Good Mother’s intercessions and prayers, that we continue to follow in the way of Mary with our care for others, and that we see each other as God sees us, with unconditional love and support.

During Term 3, we have had a wonderful time celebrating and growing in our Special Character activities. A heartfelt thank you to all the families for your continued support and participation in our La Valla celebrations, as well as other special character events throughout the term. Your presence truly enriches our community.
|
We are also thrilled with the success of our first ever Pajama Day fundraiser which took place on Friday 13th September. It was amazing to see so many students take part in this school wide event, which was a fun and meaningful way to come together and give back.

YCC Day
This Past Friday (13th of September) we held our YCC Pyjama Day. This was to raise Money for Caritas’ work with Holy Trinity School in Papua New Guinea to help them build classrooms, chairs, desks and resources to help students who attend the school to learn and grow. We as a college were able to raise $381.90 to help Holy Trinity School. We would like to say a huge thank you to everyone who was involved and for your continued generosity to help our community and help those around the world. Thank you and God Bless.

La Valla Quiz Night
On Friday the 6th of September, the Marcellin College La Valla group hosted the fundraising Quiz Night to raise money for the service projects that we will be doing throughout the year. The event was filled with fun, laughter and excitement with the costumes and competitive spirit of each team. We were also graced with the musical talents of our ākonga Temaleti Tupou, Joshua Emmerson, Khloe Malaesilia and Grace Collins throughout the evening and made it a great success.
|
A big thank you for the support that you give to our service projects here at Marcellin College. We pray and thank God for each and every one of you.

Cans for Christmas
|
Cans For Christmas is under way please make sure that you bring in your cans of food to kaitiaki classes and Kaitiaki teachers will be able to give ākonga, 1 whānau point for each can that they bring in. This is to help our local St. Vinnies foodbank for the Christmas rush that they go through each year. Thank you all for your support and God Bless.

Marcellin Spirit Awards
At Marcellin College we use the name ‘Marcellin Spirit’ for Positive Behaviour for Learning. Marcellin Spirit teaches positive behaviour for learning by teaching expectations to all ākonga. We do this via specific Marcellin Spirit lessons, as well as by rewarding expected behaviours. We link our expected behaviours to the Marist Pillars. Our free and frequent reward system is whānau points, which ākonga can track using the MyMahi platform.

SUSO Vocal Winner
|
SUSO 2024 has been a great success for our Marcellin College music students. We had 4 very good bands, 4 fantastic vocal soloists and 2 excellent instrumental soloists enter.
|
Temaleti Tupou made it all the way to the Final and our band Marijunz gave a great performance at the Semifinals narrowly missing out on a finals spot.
|
Congratulations to Temaleti who WON the vocal solo section and also to Joshua Emmerson who wrote the winning song that Tema sang in the final.
|
Well done to all our students who were brave enough to put themselves out there with a wide range of talented students entering from Year 8 to Year 13.

NCEA Senior Practice Examination Timetable:
Our NCEA Practice Examinations will be held next week and the timetable is shown below. This examination will serve as a crucial component of our learning process and the results could be used as a Derived Grade if your child is absent for valid reasons in the November NCEA Examinations (NZQA - Derived Grades).

These examinations will take place in the MacKillop block, where the morning paper begins at 9 am and the afternoon one starts at 1.15 pm. Attendance is compulsory and ākonga must be in full school uniform with the correct equipment.
|
|
|
|
|
NCEA Assessment rules for students:
Absence: If students are absent from the Practice Exams due to illness or other valid reasons, they will need to contact the Principal's Nominee (Ms Hunt). Medical certificates are required to allow students to sit their exam papers during the catch-up slots. Students will not be allowed to sit for any exam paper they missed in Term Four due to authenticity reasons.
|
Important Notes About Practice Exams and Derived Grades
|
Schools must be able to assure NZQA that derived grades are collected in a way that mirrors the format and conditions of the externally assessed standard. This means that if an ākonga engages in any of the following we will not be able to assure conditions and practice exam results will not be used for a derived grade:
|
- Leaving the exam for a toilet break more than once
- A toilet break that lasts more than five minutes
- Leaving full-screen mode in a digital exam
- Using notes
- Communicating with or disturbing other candidates/ākonga in any way
- Accessing a mobile phone or digital device of any sort (including a watch)

|
NCEA Achievement Information
|
As Year 11 and 12 ākonga prepare to advance to Year 12 and 13, they must do so with the necessary skills to succeed at these levels. With NCEA now requiring both Literacy and Numeracy standards to be met before qualification, the pathway is no longer straightforward. In light of this, ākonga must achieve a minimum of 40 credits to progress to the next year level. The upcoming reports will provide a clear overview of how many credits ākonga have earned and how many are still needed and available. Attendance at and success in external exams will be crucial to ensure ākonga meet the required credit threshold.

Senior Reports
|
Final full senior reports for the year will be emailed home to all Yr 11, 12 & 13 whānau on Rāmere/Friday 27 Mahuru/September. These reports will be a summary of the year, with comments related to effort, progress, and achievement. The next steps will also be identified for all ākonga, either for the upcoming external assessments or to complete any remaining internal achievement standards. There will be one final report emailed home to all Yr 11, 12 & 13 whānau on Rāmere/Friday 1 Whiringa-ā-nuku/November which will be an NCEA summary report. This will show all achievement for the year and practice exam results (used for NZQA - Derived Grades if needed). The report will also show whether ākonga have gained their NCEA level already and how many remaining credits there are available in the external assessment (exams).

Some of our students were treated to a presentation by 2 international composers and musicians from Canada Samantha Whelan and Walter Whitebear who were here in NZ for an international music conference at Auckland University.
|
They presented on their travels and how their music is inspired by the land of their heritage.
|

From September 2nd to 6th, 12 enthusiastic players took to the Te Pai Netball Centre, showcasing their skills and determination. Over the week of 10 intense games, the girls displayed remarkable resilience, overcoming injuries and last-minute team changes to achieve an impressive 8 wins. Their hard work paid off as they finished strong in 5th place, earning a well-deserved promotion to B Grade for 2025. Congratulations to the team on an incredible tournament!

Fusion Fest - Friday 25th October 2024, 1.45pm
Marcellin College is hosting our annual cultural festival “Fusion Fest”, which takes place on Friday 25th October, Term Four this year. The festival will officially begin at 1.00pm. The cultural performances will commence at approximately 1.45pm in the school La Valla Gymnasium. There will be kai/food and inu/drink available from stalls on the school field which will be open until 3pm.

We would love to offer a range of food and beverages from a range of cultures at our festival. If you know of someone who would like to run a stall, please contact office@marcellin.school.nz BYO gazebo. Tables and chairs are provided.
