Message from the Tumuaki/Principal -
Ms. Maria Prescott

|
We end this week celebrating the outstanding achievements of our Marcellin College netball team at the Upper North Islands Netball annual tournament, UNISS held at Netball Waitākere. Our ‘Wahine Toa’ netballers have made us proud by the way they have demonstrated courage, grit, and resilience throughout the season. This is Aroha ki te Mahi / Love of Work - putting 100% of their heart and spirit into the mahi/work on the court and during training throughout the season! The team’s promotion to Grade B next year is a great testament to their growth and potential, a common theme seen across all the sporting codes this year. Ngā mihi koutou ki a koe / thank you very much to our Year 13 leaders in each of the sports teams who leave a legacy of excellence, and to our dedicated Sports Director, coaches and managers for their Marist hearts of service.
|
Next week is an important week as our Year 10 and some of our senior ākonga prepare to sit the NCEA Literacy and Numeracy corequisites. We as a whānau and kaimahi / staff can support our rangatahi to ‘Seek the Best’ in these assessments by demonstrating Aroha ki te Mahi, like encouraging a positive ‘can do’ attitude, checking in and providing emotional support, and making sure they communicate with their kaiako when they have questions.
|
Social Justice Week also begins next week and we look forward to the activities that will be led by our La Valla and Special Character Prefects. The theme for this Social Justice week this year is ‘Choose forgiveness, know peace / Kōwhiria te murunga hara, kia mōhio ki te rangimārie.’ which is part of the three-year overarching theme: ‘Imagine Peace For All / Pohewatia te Rangimārie mō te Katoa. The message from our Bishops emphasise the following key points to reflect on during the week:
|
- Peace is a Choice: We can choose to be peacemakers and forgive others.
- Healing Through Forgiveness: Forgiveness can help us and others heal from hurt.
- Reconciliation: We can make things right by apologizing and forgiving.
- Be a Force for Good: We can help make the world a better place by being kind and forgiving.
To conclude Social Justice Week, we are excited to host the Marcellin College YCC (You & Caritas Care) Pyjama Day, a special event where Caritas partners with Catholic schools throughout Aotearoa/New Zealand.
|
This day of solidarity will see us come together as a Marcellin whānau to support a meaningful cause by bringing a gold coin or two to raise both funds and awareness for Holy Trinity School in Papua New Guinea.
|

Fusion Fest - Friday 25th October 2024, 1.45pm
Marcellin College is hosting our annual cultural festival “Fusion Fest”, which takes place on Friday 25th October, Term Four this year. The festival will officially begin at 1.00pm. The cultural performances will commence at approximately 1.45pm in the school La Valla Gymnasium. There will be kai/food and inu/drink available from stalls on the school field which will be open until 3pm.
|
We would love to offer a range of food and beverages from a range of cultures at our festival. If you know of someone who would like to run a stall, please contact office@marcellin.school.nz BYO gazebo. Tables and chairs are provided.

Special Character

Over the past two weeks, our focus within the Special Character of the kura/school has been on deepening our understanding of liturgy and prayer within our whānau groups, specifically focusing on learning more about our whānau Saints/Inspirations in the likes of Mary Mackillop, Suzanne Aubert, St Benedict of Nursia & Bishop Pompallier.
|
As we enter Week 7, our Special Character team is working closely with Year 10 students, guiding them in leading through Special Character service. This collaboration not only enhances their leadership skills as we become closer to our senior students leaving, but also reinforces the values at the heart of our school's mission.
We look forward to sharing these upcoming experiences with you all! Mālō 'aupito & may this new season of spring bring renewal, growth, and abundant joy.

Cans for Christmas
|
Cans For Christmas is under way please make sure that you bring in your cans of food to kaitiaki classes and Kaitiaki teachers will be able to give ākonga, 1 whānau point for each can that they bring in. This is to help our local St. Vinnies foodbank for the Christmas rush that they go through each year. Thank you all for your support and God Bless.

Marcellin Spirit Awards
At Marcellin College we use the name ‘Marcellin Spirit’ for Positive Behaviour for Learning. Marcellin Spirit teaches positive behaviour for learning by teaching expectations to all ākonga. We do this via specific Marcellin Spirit lessons, as well as by rewarding expected behaviours. We link our expected behaviours to the Marist Pillars. Our free and frequent reward system is whānau points, which ākonga can track using the MyMahi platform.
Marcellin Spirit certificates are awarded to the ākonga with the most Whānau points each week of the term. Congratulations to the following recipients for Week 5 of Term Three:

Literacy and Numeracy Digital Corequisites
This term the literacy and numeracy digital corequisites take place on:

Rāhina/Monday 9 Mahuru/September: literacy (reading) periods one, two, and three

Ākonga will need to arrive at school on time and with a charged device for these days.

Year 11 Assessments
|
This term is a very busy term for Yr 11 ākonga, with final internal assessments due, literacy and numeracy corequisites, the new CAA (Common Assessment Tasks), as well as senior practice exams.
|
|
|
|
NCEA Senior Practice Examination Timetable:
Our NCEA Practice Examinations will be held in week 10 of this term and the timetable is shown below. This examination will serve as a crucial component of our learning process and the results could be used as a Derived Grade if your child is absent for valid reasons in the November NCEA Examinations (NZQA - Derived Grades).

These examinations will take place in the MacKillop block, where the morning paper begins at 9 am and the afternoon one starts at 1.15 pm. Attendance is compulsory and ākonga must be in full school uniform with the correct equipment.
|
|
|
|
|
NCEA Assessment rules for students:
Absence: If students are absent from the Practice Exams due to illness or other valid reasons, they will need to contact the Principal's Nominee (Ms Hunt). Medical certificates are required to allow students to sit their exam papers during the catch-up slots. Students will not be allowed to sit for any exam paper they missed in Term Four due to authenticity reasons.
|

Important Notes About Practice Exams and Derived Grades
|
Schools must be able to assure NZQA that derived grades are collected in a way that mirrors the format and conditions of the externally assessed standard. This means that if an ākonga engages in any of the following we will not be able to assure conditions and practice exam results will not be used for a derived grade:

Leaving the exam for a toilet break more than once
|

|
A toilet break that lasts more than five minutes
|

|
Leaving full-screen mode in a digital exam
|

|
Communicating with or disturbing other candidates/ākonga in any way
|

|
Accessing a mobile phone or digital device of any sort (including a watch)
|
|
|
|
Year 7-9 Tasters
|
Next Rāmere/Friday Year 7, 8, and 9 tasters end, with new tasters beginning on Rāhina/Monday of Week 9. These are the final tasters for the year. Whānau of all Yr 7, 8, and 9 ākonga will receive a report in Term Four, Week 4 via email with results and comments for all tasters this year. This will help ākonga select tasters and/or options from Term Four, Week 5.

Senior Reports
|
Final full senior reports for the year will be emailed home to all Yr 11, 12 & 13 whānau on Rāmere/Friday 27 Mahuru/September. These reports will be a summary of the year, with comments related to effort, progress, and achievement. The next steps will also be identified for all ākonga, either for the upcoming external assessments or to complete any remaining internal achievement standards. There will be one final report emailed home to all Yr 11, 12 & 13 whānau on Rāmere/Friday 1 Whiringa-ā-nuku/November which will be an NCEA summary report. This will show all achievement for the year and practice exam results (used for NZQA - Derived Grades if needed). The report will also show whether ākonga have gained their NCEA level already and how many remaining credits there are available in the external assessment (exams).
