|
Mālō ‘aupito to our Tongan fānau ako / students and staff who organised our Uike Kātoanga’i ‘o e lea faka-Tonga – Tongan Language Week. The theme is 'E tu'uloa 'a e lea faka-Tongá 'o ka lea'aki 'i 'api, siasí (lotú), mo e nofo-'a-kāingá - The Tongan Language will be sustainable when used at home, church and in the wider community which our Marcellin famili demonstrated during the full school assembly, Tongan connection programme with Manurewa High school and the Tongan Misa / Mass.
|
We were blessed to have Bishop Stephen Lowe celebrate the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary Feast day and Sacramental Mass last week with our school chaplain Fr Alex. Ruby Ruma was commissioned as the Kaitātaki Ākonga leader for her service, sharing her mātauranga and tikanga with our kura.
|
Our Career Expo was a success, featuring a range of tertiary and vocational providers who highlighted various career options and pathways. This event is scheduled annually to align with the Senior Options choices, helping our tamaiki ako make well-informed decisions. For more details about the available courses, please refer to the following booklets: the 2024 NCEA Level 1 Course Information Booklet for current Year 10 fānau ako, and the 2024 NCEA Levels 2 & 3 Course Information Booklet for current Year 11 and 12. A timely reminder that our fānau ako stay alert and aware of their surroundings (situational awareness) when traveling to and from school, given the rise in assaults and undesirable behavior on public transport and in public spaces including the Warehouse and bus depots. If your tamariki has a concern, please encourage them to talk to you, a member of the Senior Leadership Team, or one of their kaiako.
|
Please remember our Year 10 fānau ako who are preparing to sit the NCEA Literacy and Numeracy Corequisites for the very first time in over a week’s time. An email was sent out to all fāmili / families of the fānau ako who are registered for this assessment (including some Year 11, 12 and 13 fānau ako). The assessment dates are in the later part of this newsletter so mark these in your calendars. If you have any questions, please contact your tamariki’s Kaiārahi in the first instance.

La Valla Group Quiz Night
|
The Quiz Night will take place on Friday 6th of the September in the Gym. Please invite your whānau and friends to come along. You can purchase tickets via the TryBooking website or by scanning the QR code at home to purchase tickets. Tables are $50.00 for 5 people or $10.00 for individual tickets. There will be food on sale for $10.00 a plate and will only be accepting cash only. Come along and have some fun. God Bless.

Special Character

Sacramental Mass
On Rāpare / Thursday 15th Here-turi-kōkā/August, we celebrated as a kura our Assumption of Mary and Sacramental Mass. Thirteen ākonga received the Sacraments of Initiation; Baptism, First Holy Communion and Confirmation.
|
|
Whakamihi to all ākonga and kaiako involved. It was a wonderful and blessed occasion to share with whānau.
|
|
|
|

Marcellin Champagnat in the Pacific 2024
|
What a pleasure it was to attend Marcellin Champagnat in the Pacific 2024. Two key questions resonated with me each day:
|
1. How can I bring Mary into my role as a Marist educator?
2. How can we make Mary relevant to young people today?
|
Each thought provoking discussion invited us to embrace our unique role in a Marist Brothers school. We were reminded that like Mary, who so dearly loved her son, we must also share this love and care for each person in our community. It was also a pleasant surprise to have our previous Tumuaki / Principal, Dean Wearmouth, facilitate one of our discussions. A clear reminder that we will always be a part of one Marist community wherever we go. Many thanks to Daniel Dungey, Brothers Barry, Bryan and Kevin for sharing their hospitality and rich knowledge of our Marist Brothers history.

Cans for Christmas
|
Cans For Christmas is under way please make sure that you bring in your cans of food to kaitiaki classes and Kaitiaki teachers will be able to give ākonga, 1 whānau point for each can that they bring in. This is to help our local St. Vinnies foodbank for the Christmas rush that they go through each year. Thank you all for your support and God Bless.

Marcellin Spirit Awards
At Marcellin College we use the name ‘Marcellin Spirit’ for Positive Behaviour for Learning. Marcellin Spirit teaches positive behaviour for learning by teaching expectations to all ākonga. We do this via specific Marcellin Spirit lessons, as well as by rewarding expected behaviours. We link our expected behaviours to the Marist Pillars. Our free and frequent reward system is whānau points, which ākonga can track using the MyMahi platform.
Marcellin Spirit certificates are awarded to the ākonga with the most Whānau points each week of the term. Congratulations to the following recipients for Week 3 of Term Three:

Literacy and Numeracy Digital Corequisites
This term the literacy and numeracy digital corequisites take place on:

Ākonga will need to arrive at school on time and with a charged device for these days.

There is a preparation rā/day that will be held on Rāmere/Friday 30 Hereturikōkā/August, where ākonga will spend periods 1, 2, and 3 preparing for literacy and periods 4 and 5 preparing for numeracy.
|

|
This term is a very busy term for Yr 11 ākonga, with final internal assessments due, literacy and numeracy corequisites, the new CAA (Common Assessment Tasks), as well as senior practice exams.

Senior Practice Exams
Our NCEA Practice Examinations will be held in week 10 of Term 3. This examination will serve as a crucial component of our learning process and the results could be used as a Derived Grade if your child is absent for valid reasons in the November NCEA Examinations (NZQA - Derived Grades).
|

Hauora / Pastoral Care
|
|
|
Wellbeing and Sleep:
Are your rangatahi getting the sleep they need?
|
We are aware that many of our ākonga are not getting adequate sleep at night with many telling us they are not falling asleep until after midnight. This can have a detrimental effect not only on their wellbeing and mental health but also on their ability to learn and achieve at school.
|
|
The recommended time for sleep for 11-12 year olds is 9-11 hours and for teens 8-10 hours each night. Sleep is important for all of us to help our bodies recover and recharge.
|
Top recommendations from sleep experts for getting a good night’s sleep are:
|
- All devices including phones and gaming turned off at least an hour before sleep
- No napping after school – napping will make you less tired when you go to bed
- Get yourself into a routine that you follow every night before going to bed e.g. having a warm shower or bath
- Aim to go to bed and wake up at the same time every day
- A warm milk drink before bed can help. Avoid drinks with caffeine like tea, coffee and energy drinks
- Try to be more active in the early morning or late afternoon (while the sun is still up)
|
Getting adequate sleep is crucial at this time particularly for seniors as they gear up for end of year exams.
|

Drama
On Wednesday 21st August, in preparation for external exams; our senior drama ākonga had the opportunity to watch the sellout season of ‘Romeo and Juliet’ in Pitt St Theatre. This adaptation, set in 1920s Aotearoa, included a special Marcellin College exclusive matinee performance and Q&A session with the cast and crew.

Visual Art
We have a high level of ability and engagement in the Yr 12 and 13 cohorts this year. In Term 3, the focus for us is working on the external folio submissions, and it is shaping up to be a very successful year for gaining credits in Visual Art. We also have two Year 13 ākonga, Sharan Jacob and Angelie Perillo, who are enrolled in the Visual Art Scholarship programme.

Music
|
The Music Department have been very busy since the start of Term 3 carrying on the success of our school Choir from the World Choir Games Our newer and bigger Marcellin College Jazz Saints competed at the KBB Music Festival last week (the biggest of its type in NZ with over 140 school ensembles).
|
They played well and received a BRONZE falling only 1 mark short of a SILVER. We Aldo had 4 bands and 6 soloists compete at SUSO heats with Temaleti Tupou reaching the semi-finals for vocal solos and Marijunz also reaching the Semifinals of the Band competition.
|
Coming up we have a visit from International renowned trumpeter and composer Samantha Whelan from Canada and our students have been enjoying lessons with guest tutor and one of NZ Top vocal tutors and Jazz singers Caitlin Smith.
|
Our School Choir recently held new auditions now have 51 excited new singers looking forward to the chance to travel to Australia in 2025 to sing at the famous Sydney Opera House for the Sydney International Youth Festival.

Dance - SUSO
|
On Rātū/Tuesday 20th of Hereturikōkā/August, Marcellin College had two groups perform at the Stand Up, Stand Out competition at Mt Roskill Youth Zone. They performed engaging and lively fusion dances (Pasifika and Contemporary) that left the judges "wanting more". While both groups did not advance to the finals, they represented the school extremely well and should be immensely proud of their efforts.Wayfinders: Janine Evile, Christian Fomai, Janette Malaesilia, Jayden Pandah, Jacob Sanonu & Uaealesi Timoteo.Nesian6: Noah Apted, Joziah Atoa, Grace Collins, Joshua Emmerson, Vika Paea & Vanessa Ugapo.

Senior Dance Showcase
|
“Crossroads” Senior Dance showcase takes place on Rāapa/Wednesday 28th and Rāpare/Thursday 29th of Hereturikōkā/August from 6.30pm in the Drama Theatre. Tickets are available from SSC, $5 adults, $3 students/children. This is a great opportunity to see what our amazing dancers have worked on throughout the year!Due to high demand in the past, we cannot guarantee door sales to be available.

Health and Physical Education Faculty
Term three has been another busy term for the Health and Physical Education Department.
|
- In the year 13 Sports Science class they have demonstrated various leadership styles by coaching the Year 7 and Year 9 ākonga.
- The Year 13 Sports Leadership class also is completing a coaching unit where they have to coach their peers through a skill development lesson.
- The Year 13 Health class learnt about Western Scientific Medicine, Complementary and Alternative Medicine and Traditional Medicine. They got to choose a Health issue that is meaningful to them and analyse how to improve it using the three types of Medicine.

The Year 12 Sports Leadership class completed tramp at Ambury Regional park as part of their practical assessment.
|
|
After the tramp, the class analysed the application of risk management strategies to a challenging outdoor activity. This was worth 6 credits.
|
|
|
The Year 12 Sports Science class has been learning the biomechanical principles involved in a golf swing. They then have to analyse their own performance and suggest how they could improve their own techniques.
|
|
The Year 12 Health class have completed their health promotion unit where they educated Marcellin College Junior students on the effects of vaping.
|
|
|
The Year 11 Physical Education class recently completed a 6km run to One Tree Hill. They are learning how movement is integral to wellbeing and how important lifelong participation in physical activity is to their overall health.
|
The Year 11 Health class have completed their decision making unit. This was based on Matariki celebrations. They have also just completed their first CAA (Common Assessment Activity) where they were assessed on Influences on Hauora.

Junior Physical Education
|
Our Year 7-10 ākonga have been working on their Sports Education Model. This is where they learn the "P" words associated with invasion games (Position, Possession, Pace, Pressure and Patience). They then use this knowledge to demonstrate the roles of a team. Every lesson they get an opportunity to be a Coach, Captain, Referee or a player.
