Message from the Principal

Kia Ora, Malo e lelei, Talofa lava, Taloha ni, Ni sa bula, Kamonaso, Kia Orana, Ni Hao, Namaste, Ram-Ram, Salām, Sanibona, Olla, warm greetings to all.
In our final Newsletter of the year I would like to acknowledge whānau support for students in what has been a very challenging year for them. It is your care and support through a very tricky time that we have been able to build on to provide students with the right learning opportunities to enable them to grow. The atmosphere in the school is one of family and love, the achievement is outstanding and the successes have been many. Ngā mihi, ngā mihi, ngā mihi nui.
This and next week we are looking forward to spending some quality time together with students outside of the classroom with our Big Days Out, Swimming Sports, Big Day In and Middle School Prizegiving. Prizegiving on 8th December begins at 10:30 and finishes at 12:00 when the school officially draws to a close. Special invitations will be sent to whānau of students receiving awards and we look forward to seeing you at the event.
It was a pleasure to see so many families, siblings and cousins attending our whānau orientation last week. It is now a time of waiting for all of those new students to begin life at Marcellin in 2021. We join those students in our waiting as we enter a new liturgical year and the season of Advent. Each year we set out to follow in the footsteps of Christ and renew our journeys to become closer to Him. Through this season and the summer, let us take time to rest, spend time with loved ones and work towards Jesus with a new sense of purpose. Let’s follow him in the way of Mary our Good Mother as St Marcellin did. Have a Blessed break whānau and see you all renewed in 2021.
Ngā mihi maioha,
Dean Wearmouth

Notice from The Royal Commission
|
The Royal Commission into abuse in state care
A Government-appointed Royal Commission of Inquiry into Abuse in Care is investigating the adequacy of the complaints process within state and faith-based institutions, including the Catholic Church, Anglican Church and the Salvation Army. The inquiry examines cases of historical abuse during 1950 to 1999.
The Commission’s role is to recommend changes to prevent any abuse or neglect from happening in New Zealand in the future.
Starting on Monday 30 November, survivors of abuse in faith-based institutions will be giving their testimony to the Commission. Cases relate to incidents that happened many decades ago.
As a result of these hearings, it is expected that some of our Marist schools could be publicly named, as survivors recount their stories from when they attended one of the 22 primary and secondary schools staffed by Marist Brothers throughout New Zealand, particularly between 1950 and 1999.
It is important to acknowledge past failings and ensure our present structures and practices are safe. As a wider community, we should be confident the Commission findings will contribute positively to the safeguarding of all people, strengthen families, communities and the wider society.
Media coverage of the Commission hearings is likely. Please contact the school if you, or any of our students, would like more information about the Commission’s work and the safeguarding policies we have in place.

Safety Driving into the School Site
|
For families who drop off and pick up, please find a place to stop within the school site. One or two cars have recently stopped at the entrance and this has led to some very near misses with cars driving in behind them. Thank you for your consideration.

Our school roll for Year 7 and Year 9 is now nearly full for 2021 and we have very few spaces left; the roll for 2021 will be closing very soon. I urge all families with siblings for 2021 to contact Peyton our enrolments officer to reserve a space and begin the enrolment process as soon as possible. Our families are our priority and I do not want any siblings to miss out.

Central Zone Year 7 & 8 Badminton Tournament
|
On Wednesday 11th November we had 9 students competing in the Central Zone Badminton competition at the Auckland Badminton Centre in Epsom. The students were separated into a singles or doubles draw, and competed in 5-6 10 minute games throughout the day. All of the students played well, improving throughout the day and picking up some great wins along the way. A fantastic day out which all of the students enjoyed, learning more about badminton like their teacher!
