Message from the Principal

Kia Ora, Malo e lelei, Talofa lava, Taloha ni, Ni sa bula, Kamonaso, Kia Orana, Ni Hao, Namaste, Ram-Ram, Salām, Sanibona, Olla, warm greetings to all.

There were some truly joyous moments as we farewelled our Year 13s and all senior students on to study leave last week. Prizegiving will live long in the memory for all who attended.  The celebratory atmosphere extended to all of the award winners, our record $140,000 of University scholarship awards and the sheer joy of Dux, Eric Fuapau, receiving the top academic award were particular highlights.

On our school website there are links to our school calendar and Facebook page where you can keep up to date with all that is going on around the school. Look out for pictures of all of the end-of-year activities that Years 7-10 will be enjoying over the next three weeks. Year 9 are away on camp this week and next week is our new “Love of Work Week’. This week has been established to ensure that through all of the fun over the next few weeks, our students keep a concern for those who may be in need in the world around us through prayer, action and compassion; look out for them asking to do some service at home to help the family out too!

This Sunday is the feast of The Presentation of Mary. What we celebrate on this day is the fact that God chose to dwell in Mary to become flesh. In response, Mary placed her whole self at the service of God. Every moment since our Baptisms, God invites us to be open to his grace and dedicate ourselves to him, as Mary did. In the busyness of this time of year, let us not forget this and dedicate ourselves to God as Marcellin did; through prayer, action and compassion for those around us.

Enrolments for 2021

Our school roll for Year 7 and Year 9 is now nearly full for 2021 and we have very few spaces left; the roll for 2021 will be closing very soon. I urge all families with siblings for 2021 to contact Peyton our enrolments officer to reserve a space and begin the enrolment process as soon as possible. Our families are our priority and I do not want any siblings to miss out.

What’s Been Happening Around the School

Special Character

Thanksgiving Mass

It was wonderful to see families and friends join with us to celebrate our Thanksgiving mass. It was a beautiful liturgy and so special to see our Year 13 students process out with their candles, symbolising their determination to keep the light of Christ alive in their hearts and shine it in the world wherever they go next year and beyond.

Masses before school and at lunchtime

The lunchtime masses continue on Thursdays and they are led by classes in Years 7-10. Well done to the Year 7 and 8 students who prepared the mass last week. Room 43 prepared and led us all very well.

Some of the staff continue to participate in mass at the Carmelites on Friday mornings, recognising that we are nourished in our ministries by the Eucharist and challenged to deepen our own faith in order to be able to share the deepest possible encounter with Christ with the rest of the staff and the students of Marcellin College.

Liturgies

Liturgies continue in Kaitiaki classes until the end of the year. Last week’s theme was about how we are all called to keep the light of Christ alive in our own heart and shine it for others to see. The students wrote the ways in which they do this on a large image of a candle in each group and the students wrote about prayer, reading scripture, being kind to others and many other things as can be seen below:

Remar

The Year 10 Remar group has continued to meet to discuss themes of communication, friendship with others and friendship with God. We also had a lovely group of nine Year 10 students helping at GIFT (Growing In Faith Together) on Saturday for the first time. They really fitted in well and served beautifully. They also learnt that service is lots of fun and brings so much joy to both those who serve and those who allow us to serve them. It is always a humbling experience and a joyous one to spend time with our wonderful GIFT friends as you can see in the pictures below:

Truly our Year 10 Remar members shone the light of Christ throughout the GIFT Centre and everyone was talking about how wonderful they were! The Remar Team was very proud of them.

For those members of our community still concerned about attending mass, the online masses continue to be available at https://www.aucklandcatholic.org.nz/ and there continue to be many other helpful resources on this site.

Community

We continue to be aware that there may be families in our community that have suffered because of Covid-19. We seek to stand in solidarity with all families in our Marcellin whānau and to do all that we possibly can to support you. In order to support our students in their learning as well as do our best to support the wellbeing of our students, there are now bowls of fruit and muesli bars in the Kaitiaki rooms which students may enjoy at any time. Some staff and Year 10 students (either Remar members or ‘Mini Vinnies’ are making sandwiches to supplement the lunches that come to the school through the ‘Eat my Lunch’ programme. The grant that we received from the Catholic Caring Foundation earlier in the year has made all of this possible. We understand that it is difficult to learn when students are hungry.

Āwhina Ako

During the school holiday break, work started on extending and upgrading our Āwhina Ako.

The work was completed in week 3, Term 4.

One of our students, Tomislav Jurisich, helped Andrew Vao, our Property Manager, put one of the new tables together that students will work on.

Tomislav then spent a day with Mr Williams, our Specialist Teacher putting all the tables together.

Ka pai Tomislav, Andrew and Mr Williams.

Cans for Christmas

It was wonderful that we could participate in such a great initiative as the Cans for Christmas one and we are grateful to all of our families who have made the sacrifice to share what they had with those in need. We have received the following message which was sent to all schools involved by the organiser:

Firstly a huge thank you for your efforts this year especially with the ups and downs we have had. We have had our biggest collection ever this year, which is a testament to our schools and their desire to help others.
We have currently collected 30,500 cans from 46 schools – we still have two schools to collect in the next couple of weeks.
These cans have made their way to families in need throughout the country.
Thank you again for your huge efforts.

Love of Work Week

‘Love of Work Week’ will take place during the week of 23-28 November and will be a time when students focus on this particular Marist Pillar. They will seek to reach out to others and show kindness, serving as Christ has shown us.

The students will have a card that they will fill in, listing the service they have done. We serve because we model our lives on Jesus Christ who served in so many ways and who, after washing his disciples feet said to them, “As I have done to you so you must also do.” Our relationship with Christ fills us with joy and love and that love spills out onto all whom we meet. It is natural to reach out in loving service of others when we are filled with this wonderful, blessed joy.

The students will be encouraged to look for ways to serve both at school and at home and to seek new ways of showing Christ’s light and love to all. You can ask to see their card and talk to them about the types of service they have completed. You might have some suggestions for other ways they could serve or a neighbour might need some help. They could volunteer to do something for their church community – cleaning up around the church and grounds is often greatly appreciated and shows our love for the house of God!

Senior Prizegiving

Senior prizegiving was a wonderful event and we congratulate all prize winners. Our students have done us proud and they have gained over $140,000 in scholarships. Such an amazing achievement by all our students.

Co-Curricular

Our students are having some wonderful learning experiences outside the classroom at present with lots of exciting adventures happening. Our youngest students have been involved in water sports, there have been volleyball tournaments and other sporting events, we have the Year 9 camp coming up this week and there will be other EOTC activities later in the term. It is great to see our students getting involved and learning new skills.

We continue to offer as many co-curricular opportunities as possible as the year continues. Some of these are:

Running Club

The running club continues led by Mr. Nicholas Haslam. It’s great to see our students getting out there in the fresh air and getting fit. Great way to de-stress after a long day in the classroom. All are welcome to join and if you would like to, please see Mr Haslam for further information.

There are lots of other activities for students to continue to be involved in such as:
– Remar
– Young Vinnies
– The Creative Writing Club
– A range of sports and training activities
– Prayer led by Year 10 students in the chapel during interval on Tuesdays and   Thursdays
– Lunchtime masses on Thursdays
– Liturgy leadership

We encourage all of our students to find an activity that enables them to feel connected to others, develop talents and interests which are already strengths, learn new skills and have fun!

Sports

Outstanding Sports Fees and Sports Uniform Return Reminder

A reminder to all parents/caregivers and students that there is a number of winter sports uniforms missing from Term 2 and Term 3 sports teams. Email reminders have been sent out weeks ago and failure to return these uniforms this week will result in a replacement cost being added to your account. If you see your child wearing any Marcellin branded sports shorts (especially rugby shorts), singlet or shirt that is not normal school uniform, please return it to the school. They should not be in your child’s possession and the cost to replace them impact on the school’s ability to provide sport opportunities for our students.

Another reminder that there is a number of sports fees still outstanding on a number of students for a range of sports. Email reminders will be going out individually over the next week to get these paid. All winter sport season fees were reduced to only $10.00 due to the shortened seasons – if you paid the full amounts already, this was distributed into other outstanding school or sports fees.
