Message from the Principal

Kia Ora, Malo e lelei, Talofa lava, Taloha ni, Ni sa bula, Kamonaso, Kia Orana, Ni Hao, Namaste, Ram-Ram, Salām, Sanibona, Olla, warm greetings to all.
It is a busy week of celebration for senior students and farewells for Year 13. They have been a very special year group and we will miss their loving service and dedication to growing our family spirit; we plan to send them off on exam leave with much joy and thankfulness. They are taonga and will always be part of the Marcellin whānau.
Our Prefect team this year have really shaped and enhanced our family spirit through a very turbulent year with Covid-19 disruption through their service and care; they are a shining example of the face and hands of Christ for all of us. We are truly blessed to have such wonderful and caring students, not only in the prefect team, but across the whole school.
Thanksgiving Mass is on Tuesday this week (3 November) at 11.15am where we celebrate 2020 and the 5-7 year journey our Year 13 students have had at Marcellin. We would love whānau to join us for this celebration.
Thursday evening (5 November) at 7pm is our Senior Prizegiving and whānau are encouraged to attend and support students as we celebrate academic success. Prefects for 2021 will also be announced this evening, and after prizegiving senior students are officially on study leave.
We have a very busy term ahead for Middle school students with camps, trips and in school activities. It is a time in school when we have space to provide more whanaungatanga opportunities. May the children grow closer to each other and our Lord through these experiences and the time spent together.
November in the Catholic church is dedicated to remembering our whānau members who have gone before us, please make time for prayers. Please also keep all of our students in your prayers during November: those preparing for examinations, those starting the next chapter of their lives post school and especially those who are finding life stressful and challenging through this period. May we all be comforted through our prayer and the prayers of our Beloved Mother Mary.
Ngā mihi maioha,
Dean Wearmouth

Thanksgiving Mass – Tuesday 3rd November, 11.30am
|
We look forward to our Thanksgiving Mass on Tuesday. As we head towards the end of this unusual year, we thank God for the grace that causes us to have faith in our loving God and we are grateful for our wonderful Marcellin community: students, families, Marist Brothers, chaplains, friends of the College, groups in our wider community with whom we are connected and our staff. We have a great deal to thank God for when we have wonderful people with whom to share the blessings of our God.

What’s Been Happening Around the School

The Tech Art Show was held in the Library on Friday 30th Oct.
Technology and Art departments combined to showcase Senior student’s work in Fashion, Design and Visual art. The intiative began last year and once again it was a great success.
A highlight of this event was the fashion show. Brynelle, Nevaeh, Semisi, Paea, Bhavika, Erin and Daoj bravely strutted the catwalk, displaying garments made and designed by Yr 11 fashion students.
The folio board displays gave an insight into the creative potential of our Senior Visual Art and Design students. They have shown resilience in a difficult year as they approach their External submissions.
Thank you to those whānau, kaiako and ākonga who attended and we hope to see you again next year.
Thank you also to all the students who helped put it together.

We were delighted to welcome Bishop Michael Gielen into the College for the Sacramental Mass. It was the first time that Bishop Michael had been with us and it was a very special occasion for our candidates and their families.
It was such a beautiful experience to see 14 of our students witnessing to their faith, surrounded by their families and members of the school community including the Marist Brothers. The Holy Spirit was certainly moving amongst us as these lovely photos show:

We have also been continuing with our liturgies in Kaitiaki groups. The most recent one focused on building up community through loving one another as God loves us. The reading from Ephesians that we reflected on called us to ‘make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace’. (Ephesians 4:1-6).
As part of the liturgy we watched part of the following clip about the life of Saint Marcellin Champagnat which highlights his particular care for young people and his desire for all young people to know that Jesus loves them.

Morning Mass and Lunchtime Mass
|
A group of staff has also been participating in mass at the Carmelites on Friday mornings at 7:30am. It is a lovely way to spend time with God and to pray for the school and our call to minister to staff and students.
Our Lunchtime masses have continued this term and we have enjoyed the masses prepared by the Year 13 cohort in week one and by the Year 12 cohort in week three. Lovely for our senior students to have one more opportunity to prepare and share in a mass together before the end of the year.

The Remar groups from Year 10-13 continue to meet to discuss various topics, to pray and have fun together.
The GIFT disco was lots of fun as can be seen in this photograph. We had a lovely meal, great fun trying to guess which saint everyone had come as, fantastic music from DJ Peyton and fabulous dancing! It was great to see our GIFT friends for the first time since we went into Alert Level Three last term.

We will farewell our Year 13 Remar members this week and most of them will be awarded their green Remar badges representing four years of participation in Remar at the Thanksgiving mass. We have made some lovely memories together and we pray that they, along with all of our Year 13 students will continue to stay close to Jesus in prayer and love.
For those members of our community still struggling to get to mass, the online masses continue to be available at https://www.aucklandcatholic.org.nz/ and there continue to be many other helpful resources on this site.

We continue to be aware that there may be families in our community that have suffered because of Covid-19. We seek to stand in solidarity with all families in our Marcellin whānau and to do all that we possibly can to support you. In order to support our students in their learning as well as do our best to support the wellbeing of our students, there are now bowls of fruit and muesli bars in the Kaitiaki rooms which students may enjoy at any time. Some staff and Year 10 students (either Remar members or ‘Mini Vinnies’ are making sandwiches to supplement the lunches that come to the school through the ‘Eat my Lunch’ programme. The grant that we received from the Catholic Caring Foundation earlier in the year has made all of this possible. We understand that it is difficult to learn when students are hungry.
There are some very important community activities coming up this week and these include the Thanksgiving Mass on Tuesday, the Senior Prizegiving on Thursday evening and the Leavers’ Dinner for Year 13 leavers. There will be members of the PTFA, Marist Brothers, Board members and staff present at the dinner and members of each group will speak as part of the evening’s formalities. We are very proud of the Year 13s of 2020 and we are pleased to have so many opportunities to celebrate the beginning of a new and wonderful adventure for each of them.

We were very pleased to hand over 201 food items (mostly cans) to those who came to collect our contribution to the Cans for Christmas appeal. Thank you to all of our families who donated food items to support those most in need in our community. Saint Vincent de Paul will have plenty of food to use to support those who are struggling this Christmas. Our prayers are also with those who are struggling at this time.

We continue to offer as many co-curricular opportunities as possible as the year continues. Some of these are:
There are lots of other activities for students to continue to be involved in such as: – Remar – Young Vinnies – The Creative Writing Club – A range of sports and training activities – Prayer led by Year 10 students in the chapel during interval on Tuesdays and Thursdays – Lunchtime masses on Thursdays – Liturgy leadership
We encourage all of our students to find an activity that enables them to feel connected to others, develop talents and interests which are already strengths, learn new skills and have fun!

Outstanding Sports Fees and Sports Uniform Return Reminder
|
A reminder to all parents/caregivers and students that there is a number of winter sports uniforms missing from Term 2 and Term 3 sports teams. Email reminders have been sent out weeks ago and failure to return these uniforms this week will result in a replacement cost being added to your account. If you see your child wearing any Marcellin branded sports shorts (especially rugby shorts), singlet or shirt that is not normal school uniform, please return it to the school. They should not be in your child’s possession and the cost to replace them impact on the school’s ability to provide sport opportunities for our students.
Another reminder that there is a number of sports fees still outstanding on a number of students for a range of sports. Email reminders will be going out individually over the next week to get these paid. All winter sport season fees were reduced to only $10.00 due to the shortened seasons – if you paid the full amounts already, this was distributed into other outstanding school or sports fees.

Central Zone Year 7 & 8 Boys Basketball Tournament
|
On Tuesday 13th October our Year 7&8 Boys Basketball team competed in a tournament at the North Shore Events Centre. With little preparation due to the holiday break and COVID lockdowns, the boys put in a lot of effort and competed well. Unfortunate to not get a win in the pool stages with a couple of very close games, they finished on a high with a win against Waiheke School in their final match. Big thanks to our community Coach Peter Cochrane for coaching the team and attending the tournament along with our teacher/manager Cheryl Schuster.

Auckland Rugby Intermediate Rugby Seven’s Tournament
|
On Wednesday 28th November the Year 7 & 8 Boys open Rugby 7’s team competed in an Auckland Rugby tournament at Waitemata Rugby Club in Henderson. These boys have been practicing on and off since Term 2 with their previous tournament cancelled in Term 3, so their excitement to get out on the paddock was clearly evident. They had some tough games coming up against some much bigger and faster boys in a very competitive tournament. A lot of these boys had never played rugby before and have come a long way over the year in developing their rugby thanks to coach Filisione Taufahema. A great day out for the team who really just enjoyed being able to finally play some rugby!

College Sport South Eastern Zone Junior Tag Tournament
|
On Thursday 29th October Marcellin took a Junior Boys and Girls Tag team out to Pulman Park in Takanini to compete against other schools from the South Eastern Zone. Due to date clashes, we competed in the southern zone for the first time in Junior Tag, taking on schools that we wouldn’t usually come up against in our North Western zone. Both teams competed well on the fields, playing 5 games each in what was a full on day of sport, in the sun. The girls team unfortunately couldn’t notch up a win but had some outstanding performers, with the boys winning their first 2 pool games and ending up in 7th place out of 14 teams. It was great to finally get these students out to a tournament again this year and they all represented Marcellin proudly! Thanks to our coaches, students Chloe and Sade in Year 12, and Mr ‘Ilaua for preparing the teams for this tournament.

Artspace Aotearoa is proud to present the third international iteration of Koloa: Fafine, ‘Aati, Mo e Tekinolosia / Women, Art, and Technology; an exhibition that centres on the significance of the female artistic lineage of Tongan koloa, to generate a transformative-context in which female Indigenous practises are a pivotal cultural force.
The exhibition brings to Aotearoa over ninety unique ngatu / barkcloth works from the collection of Tunakaimanu Fielakepa, the Dowager Lady Fielakepa, revered as the foremost authority on customary Tongan art practices in the Kingdom of Tonga. Her wealth of knowledge has and continues to be called upon by museums and institutions as an advisory, and contributor to global Indiginous scholarship.

In 2019, the Dowager Lady Fielakepa exhibited her extensive collection of rare and new Tongan artworks in Koloa: Women, Art and Textiles, an exhibition at Langafonua ‘a Fafine, Tonga. This site was established in 1953 by Queen Sālote Tupou III, as a historic centre for women’s customary arts. The exhibition was a momentous cotemporal occasion; it paid tribute to the cultural and social significance of koloa art practises while honoring the Dowager Lady Fielakepa for her life-long commitment to, and passion for the endurance and vitality of these diverse practices. (Koloa connotes something of treasured value; interchangeable material and immaterial wealth.)
Koloa was shown for a second time at independent art space Para Site, Hong Kong, in an expanded exhibition that included work by contemporary female practitioners: Tanya Edwards (Tongan, Māori, Tainui), Nikau Hindin (Ngai Tūpoto, Te Rarawa, Ngāpuhi) and Vaimaila Urale (Sāmoa). For this third iteration of Koloa, Artspace Aotearoa focusses on the potentiality that these female practitioners embody, making-vital Indigenous narratives and knowledge while generating progressive perspectives through adaptive contemporary methodologies. Additionally, works by Sarah Vaki and Tutana Tetuanui from Tahiti will be on display at Artspace Aotearoa.
Koloa: Fafine, ‘Aati, Mo e Tekinolosia / Women, Art, and Technology ( 2020, Para Site, Hong Kong) was co-curated by Tunakaimanu Fielakepa, the Dowager Lady Fielakepa, with Cosmin Costinas and Vivian Ziherl.
