Welcome to Term 4! It was such good news for the whole country to go to Alert Level One. This has enabled us to go ahead with some very important and worthwhile school events this term. Last week Sports Prizegiving was a great occasion for the whole school to reconvene back together once more and it was an absolute pleasure to see students being awarded for their effort and achievement.
A reminder that this week we are holding a Progress evening for all Year 7 -13 students and families this Wednesday on 21st October from 3:30pm-6:30pm to give you an opportunity to come into school to discuss your child(ren)’s progress and next steps to enable them to achieve to their personal excellence. Also a reminder that school closes at 1:10pm to enable staff to prepare for the event.
This Thursday our long awaited Sacramental Mass will take place in the school chapel. Please pray for all students who will be receiving Sacraments of Initiation. Through receiving these Sacraments may they draw every closer to our loving Lord.
Finally, we have much to look forward to now this term. Staff are working hard in the spirit of Marcellin Champagnat to squeeze in as many opportunities as we can for students to make up for Covid disruption. Please take note of important dates in this newsletter and an eye on our events calendar on the school web site to keep up to date with a very busy Term 4! See you at one of our school events soon.

School Collaboration Band
Placed in Tangata Beats & Smokefree Rockquest
|
This year, for the first time ever, Marcellin College and Aorere College collaborated in the music scene, creating our first school blended band called Redwav.
Our very own Culistofa Petelo (year 13) played the bass guitar and helped Redwav to victory, claiming their first prize win at the Smokefree Rockquest (band category) and 3rd place for the Tangata Beats (band category) competitions.
We are extremely proud of Culistofa and wish him all the very best with his music career pathway!

The 2020 school ball was a huge success. We are all grateful to Ms Cobban (Year 13 Dean) and her Ball Committee for all the mahi that went into making the students’ dream a reality. Ms Cobban’s determination to ensure that the students had this important experience ensured the ball went ahead despite the need to shift the date several times.
The Great Northern Room at the Ellerslie Events Centre was aglow with lanterns and fairy lights to suit the theme of ‘Endless Moonlight’ and the students were stunning in their formal dress. It was wonderful to see them all really enjoying their special night. There will be photos from the professional photographer to share in the next newsletter so watch this space!

Outward Bound Scholarship Recipients –
Shennade Wilson & Jaylynn Burgess
|

I, Shennade Wilson and Jaylyn Burgess attended Outward Bound in Anakiwa in the South Island this year. Outward Bound was a fun and inspirational experience that helped me physically and mentally.
We were granted scholarships to attend the 21 Day Hiringa leadership course. Outward Bound helped me to push my limits and strive for more throughout the course. I learnt so many new skills through solo camping, tramping, sailing, community work, running a half-marathon and so many more experiences that gave me a new perspective on life and an appreciation for so much more.
I started the Outward Bound course very shy and quiet but as the days went by I grew stronger and more confident in myself. During the course I grew strong connections with the people around me and in my watch group, Blake Watch. Blake Watch was made up of 14 students who were all isolated from the rest of the watches because we were from Auckland but during that week of isolation we grew together as a team and as a whanau.
We joined the Anakiwa Camp after the week of isolation. At Outward Bound there are no devices allowed so being without technology was a challenge away from home which made our experience and support from our watch mates more important. I’ve made some amazing friendships.
Outward Bound is a life changing experience. Some of the highlights during my time at Outward Bound was learning how to put up the mainsail and sailing across Charlotte Sound for three and a half days straight, sleeping on the boat as well.
We went tramping for the first time with my watch and one of my instructors Dave for three days. I had a solo camping experience for three days and two nights where I learnt to put up my own fly (shelter) and camped on my own.
We had PT (physical training) every morning and we did a lot of tramping to the top of beautiful mountains. On the second to last day we ran a half-marathon which took me three hours and 10 minutes. I am so proud of myself for finishing it.
I would highly recommend other students if they get the chance to go to Outward Bound to take it as it is an experience that I am grateful for and one I will never forget.

I,Jaylyn Burgess and Shennade Wilson got the once in a lifetime opportunity to attend a 21 day Outward Bound Course, starting from the 23rd September and ending on the 13th of October.
An opportunity we both truly appreciate having and taking. The course was challenging in both physical and mental capacity;but effective, helpful and really enjoyable. It taught us values and strong values to live by, it pushes you to your limits provided you put your all in.
My highlight of the course was strangely during our isolation period as we as a watch formed strong bonds, taking challenges head-first and not having other watches around us. Our hike during this period was a 4 day hike at deep creek near devils hut reaching a thousand metres and setting up camp on a ridge 800m up during gale-force winds and stormy weather, having to hold down our flyers as we were sleeping.
Although it’s challenging, afterwards it gives you the thought, there is more in you than you know;if I was told what would exactly happen during that activity, I wouldn’t believe I could do that.
But it’s not really the destination that is important, it’s the journey and so the people with you and your actions along the way; the journey moulds and shapes you,the destination is just the objective, the point away from the start so there is a journey.
If you think you are capable,go for this journey ,this opportunity,go for an Outward Bound Course if the opportunity presents itself.
Jaylnn Burgess, Year 12 student

We look forward to the students in the Sacramental Programme receiving the Sacraments of Initiation and we are delighted that Bishop Michael Gielen will join us for the celebration in the school chapel on 22 October at 11am. Rather than having the full-school mass for this occasion, we will make it a special celebration for the students and their families in the more intimate space of our chapel. We have continued to pray for the students in the programme and we will continue to do so. It is such an important time in these young people’s lives and in the lives of their families. It is also a wonderful witness to the school community.
We hope that it will be possible for us to have our Thanksgiving Mass in the usual way to give thanks for the year and the way we have shared it together as a community of prayer and as a family. We pray that we will all be able to gather together as one in Christ on 3 November and we look forward to many families and invited guests joining us for this final mass for our Year 13 students.
We had a very special Special Character Professional Development session for the staff during which we looked at The Rosary, why and how we pray it and the value of meditating upon the most important events in the life of our Lord. We were especially grateful that Brothers Damien and Humphrey could join in with the small group sharing and delighted that Brother Humphrey could share with us his wisdom and experiences of praying the Rosary. The Marist Brothers who support the College are a very precious taonga and we thank God for their continued presence in and support of the College.
We also looked at a very short Youtube clip about the Rosary which might be of interest:
Why Pray the Rosary
Following on from this insight for staff, the liturgies in Katiaki have also been connected to the Rosary. The liturgies in the first week of Term Four included a meditation on one of the mysteries of the Rosary. It was impressive to see our students, even some of our younger students, able to lead these with confidence, reverence and a genuinely meditative approach.
While I know that many of you pray the Rosary regularly in your families, it might be lovely as we continue through this month of October to talk about some of the mysteries of the Rosary in your families and to share how they are relevant to our lives today.
For those who may not be sure the mysteries are:

The Remar groups from Year 10-13 continue to meet to discuss and pray the Rosary.
We have also been discussing our favourite saints as the GIFT dinner and disco is coming up soon and our senior Remar students are invited to come along and share in the fun with our GIFT friends who really enjoy this annual event.
It has been interesting to hear about the saints’ stories and to learn from our Remar students which saints inspire them and why. The Remar Team have also learnt from students about saints who were unknown to them prior to this discussion.
Vivienne Aherne, who runs the GIFT programme sent out this invitation for our senior Remar students.
We continue to enjoy the deep, honest sharing that continues during Remar meetings at all levels.
Gathering in our churches once more:
It is wonderful to come home to our churches and church communities once more and our lunchtime masses began again with the Year 13 cohort preparing the mass for the first week of this term. The theme for the mass was about being grateful and despite the struggles of this year, it is heartening to see that our students still feel deeply grateful for all that they experience in their lives, for their faith which shelters and comforts them, for their families, their educational opportunities and for life itself.
Meanwhile for those still struggling to get to mass the online masses continue to be available at https://www.aucklandcatholic.org.nz/ and there continue to be many other helpful resources on this site.

Pink Shirt Day – Friday 17 October
|
It was Pink Shirt Day on Friday 16 October this year. This is a day when people wear pink shirts to school or work to show they are against bullying. The focus for 2020 was “lift each other up.” It was great to see the staff really showing that they stand together against bullying by wearing pink shirts, ties and various other pink attire. The ‘pink’ morning tea really showed the unity of the staff and our determination to ensure that we are one family, determined to do all we can to prevent and stop bullying.

We encourage all of our students to find an activity that enables them to feel connected to others, develop talents and interests which are already strengths, learn new skills and have fun!
