Message from the Principal

Kia Ora, Malo e lelei, Talofa lava, Taloha ni, Ni sa bula, Kamonaso, Kia Orana, Ni Hao, Namestay, Ram-Ram, Salām, Sanibona, Olla, warm greetings to all.
It has been an absolute pleasure to welcome students and staff back on site this week. Our ‘Love of work’ school pillar has been very evident with everybody working hard to catch up on learning. The seniors have been working extra hard to complete internal standards to be ready to focus on external study from week 9 onwards. We appreciate any support and encouragement you give at home and if you feel that your son or daughter needs further support in school then please contact us.
Following on from reassurances in our communications last week, we will work very closely with all of our students to ensure that all at Marcellin College are not disadvantaged with their progress and have achievement to be proud of at the end of the school year. Again, your support as family to reassure your child(ren) will help them to feel calm and confident about engaging with their learning until the end of the school year.
In this Sunday’s Gospel reading from Matthew, Jesus reassures the Disciples “ where two or three meet in my name, I am there among them.” During these times of hard work and catch up, please remember to take the time to keep Jesus in our lives through the gathering in his name at home, at work and in our own prayer.

All students in Years 10 to 12 have been given a Course Selection booklet and an opportunity to find out more about these courses at the Options Afternoon run by the Head of Departments.

Please take the time to talk with your child/ren about their career goals and the subjects they will need to help them reach these. Careers.govt.nz is an excellent website with more information about the different careers available and tips on choosing a career path if they are unsure.

To allow students more time in class to prepare, the practice exams were delayed until Wednesday 16th – Friday 18th September. These exams are most important: if for any reason students were unable to sit the NZQA exams in November/December, these practice exams would form the basis of derived grades. The practice exam timetable is:

Reporting Student Absences
|
A friendly reminder student absences are to be done via the school app, website, email or calling the school office. Students can not explain absences for siblings or themselves. A written note is to be provided or a phone call on (09) 625 6509 (ext705) if you are wanting to report directly to our Attendance Officer Courtney Todd.
Please do not reply to previous texts or emails sent from the school about any past correspondences, with your child/ren absences. These messages does not go directly to the Attendance Officer.
For all future absences, follow the current school procedure’s of calling the office via the absence line or via the website (Report an absence).

Students are expected to be in full uniform at all times. This includes black leather shoes, white socks for girls and school socks for boys, the Marcellin jumper and the Marcellin jacket. Please ensure students uniform is labelled. Thank you for your support with this.
|

Breakfast Club and Lunches
|
A reminder that a free breakfast club for all students runs Monday, Wednesday, and Friday 7.45am- 8.35am in the food tech room. There are also 15 lunches provided daily by Eat My Lunch, that can be obtained from our Nurse, just let her or the office know.
|
|
|
|
|
|
|
|
|
All parents are warmly invited to join us at our Annual Sports Prizegiving. This will be held in the school gymnasium on Tuesday 13th October at 2pm.
|
|
|
|
|
Our Annual School Ball was scheduled to take place on September 12th. We have now secured a new booking for October 17th but we need to wait to see what Alert Level we move to before confirming this. Please do not pay the balance of the ball ticket at this stage, we will send out more information closer to the time.
|
|
|
Assessment Evening Wednesday 16 September 6:30 pm for Years 11 to 13 music students
|
Parents and whānau please mark this in your calendars so that you can be there to enjoy support your son/daughter performing.
Special request – to all parents of music students. Please ask them to perform their pieces to you or whanau every week or so. They need a regular audience to gain performing experience.

What’s Been Happening Around the School
|
|
|
|
|
The Marcellin Spirit team is running a whānau points competition for this term, with specific focuses for Weeks 7, 8, 9, and 10 of this term. In Week 7 the focus was being on time to class (Presence/Aroaro); this week it is bringing all necessary equipment to class (Simplicity/Ngawari); Week 9 it is completing work to the best of your ability (Love of Work/Aroha ki te Mahi), and in Week 10 it is showing kindness, compassion and care for others (Ki te Huarahi o Maria). The Middle School and Senior School Kaitiaki with the most whānau points collected between Week 4 and 9 of this term will receive a pizza lunch in Week 10. Parents and students – remember that you can see individual whānau points in the KAMAR portal!

We continue to celebrate the joy of being a faith community by finding ways to pray together while being mindful of the need for care for all.
Our return to school after the Alert Level Three lockdown once more began with prayerful liturgies in which we used the passage from 1 Corinthians 12:12-27 to acknowledge our unity as one family in Christ
This week we have a lot to focus on as 6-12 September is Social Justice Week and there are also two important Marian feasts within the week.

Families are once more the hub of the Church Community as we are, again, unable to gather in our churches. The online masses continue to be available at https://www.aucklandcatholic.org.nz/ and there are many other helpful resources on this site. It was lovely to see one of our chaplains, Monsignor Bernard Kiely leading the mass during the weekend. We pray for many blessings for our families.

 As a Marist community we acknowledge Mary as the mother of us all and we continue to entrust all our students, families and staff to Mary’s protective embrace as she draws us all closer to her Son.

We are deeply aware that there may be families in our community that have suffered because of Covid-19. Marcellin College is a family and if you are struggling, we want to know as we want to do all that we possibly can to support you. We continue to have many initiatives which are aimed at building up our sense of community even from a distance such as:
Tongan Language Week
The Tongan students have been working hard to plan some great activities to celebrate Tongan language week and these activities include:
Monday – Kahoot! competition in the library at lunchtime
Tuesday – Virtual assembly led by the Tongan students.
Wednesday – Tongan dance classes in the Performing Arts Centre at lunchtime
Thursday – A liturgy in the chapel for Year 11, 12 and 13 Tongan students (to restrict the number of students in the chapel)
Friday – Volleyball competition in the gym
We look forward to a wonderful week celebrating the Tongan language and culture and we are grateful to the Tongan students for organising this event. Students are welcome to wear their Tongan cultural attire to school only on Thursday.
Cans for Christmas
Marcellin College is involved in the Cans for Christmas project this year. Cans for Christmas began in 2015. It is a project that includes 51 schools around New Zealand and, last year collected more than 26,000 cans for families in need.
We ask our families to support our efforts if they can by sending canned goods to school with our students. As the week of 6-12 September is Social Justice Week it seems appropriate that we begin this coming week.

There are many exciting co-curricular activities for our students to get involved in at the moment. Some of these are:
The Design a Shirt Competition currently running where students can design a shirt to celebrate women in Science. Click on the link for more information and to get involved. Any questions can be directed to students’ Science teachers. Entries close 18th September.
There is also a Think Kind Competition running. Students can view the details here: The 2020 Think Kind Competition. This competition encourages students to be kind to animals, the environment and one another. Students can create any project of their choice such as an essay, a short film, a poster/mural, a scratch coding project, a speech or a dance, a school fundraiser, or a petition, etc., as long as the topic relates to being kind!
For those students with a passion for Music the 21 Play It Strange Competition is the perfect way to get your talents out there in the community! Use this link’s resources to start on a song Lion Foundation Songwriting Competition 2020.
There are lots of other activities for students to continue to be involved in such as:

- Young Vinnies
- The Creative Writing Club
- A range of sports
- The activities prepared by our Tongan students for Tongan Language Week
- Prayer led by Year 10 students during interval on Tuesdays and Thursdays
We encourage all of our students to find an activity that enables them to feel connected to others, develop talents and interests which are already strengths, learn new skills and have fun!

Important Notice for All Parents Collecting their Children from Sports Practices

If you have a child who has been participating in a sport outside of Marcellin College this year and/or have been a representative for any sport, we want to know! Please send any information and photos through to Cameron Bitchener at bitchenerc@marcellin.school.nz by Monday 21st September.

Sport at Alert Level 2.5 (Gathering sizes of 10)
|
With the Governments recent announcement of the extension of Alert Level 2.5 with gathering sizes to be no more than 10, winter sports matches will not be able to continue until Thursday 17th September at the earliest. When we receive more information from College Sport and the other Sports Governing bodies we will pass this on. We are able to continue with practices and internal sports competitions within Marcellin College, and these will continue this week. The driveway to the bottom courts of the school will continue to be blocked after school so please park in the top carpark when collecting your child. Rest assured, all sports equipment that is used is disinfected after every use.
A reminder that under alert level 2 there are to be no spectators or parents at any sports practices or games.

We are currently planning for Junior Sport competitions for Term 4 and are on the lookout for coaches and referees for the following sporting codes: Touch, Volleyball, Tag, and Softball.
